On Acemagic Mini PCs, use F7 to give you the boot menu. That will allow you to select the device to boot or enter BIOS setup.

Odd, I looked at all the very limited documentation and didn't find anything about the boot menu key. Since they didn't say anything, I tried all the default AMI BIOS keys, I wonder what possessed them to make it a non-standard key?

I'll have to try that next time I fire it up to boot from a USB. :)

You folks realize that BIOS companies like AMI, Phoenix, or Insyde make money from licensing fees. And your Chinese OEM is cutting corners to save costs.

Certainly, so what is your plan on how I should remedy that situation? :unsure: I buy the products as advertised, I'm not the patent police. I'm sure a ton of similar products we buy have similar issues.

My point is they're not going chose a fully featured BIOS. Which comes with the Mini PC territory, or like what happened before with cheap netbooks. The licensing becomes a non-trivial part of the manufacturing expense. So you're more likely to get a generic BIOS.

OK, I'll certainly agree with that. That being the case, I can't imagine why the generic AMI BIOS keys weren't used, odd that a non-standard key triggers the boot menu. No big deal, just odd.

In any case, that's a minor issue, it turned out that the Secure Boot mechanism is fully implemented in this BIOS, so it's good enough for my purposes. :-)

Not sure who you're responding to. We were discussing the BIOS settings for Secure Boot. I agree, you don't "boot" the BIOS, it does the booting. :LOL:

I didn't say anything about booting. There are no BIOS settings for Secure Boot, because Secure Boot is a UEFI thing. UEFI != BIOS.

Very aware of that. When I started researching why they would leave off the ability to enable secure boot I discoved then that there fees for the certs of course. But I did discover that if you press the right person for it, they may provide to you a BIOS version with Secure Boot. I just never bothered.

Ironically, it seems to be all the more expensive units (at least from Acemagic) that omit the Secure Boot but the cheap units on N97, N100, N150, etc. include it. Go figure.

Yes, that system has them. Not all do. Many Mini PCs report to Windows that they are capable of Secure Boot, but there is no way to actually enable it in the BIOS.

That does seem counterintuitive. :) I was believing that they left them out as well, they're just a bit harder to find in the menus for the PC.

I think pseymour's contention was that there is no secure boot settings for any BIOS, that is patently false. There are in all the BIOS versions I have here on three machines.

Any system with proper Secure Boot will have settings for it in the UEFI BIOS because there are operations such as key management and simply enabling / disabling Secure Boot that must be exposed by the BIOS.

Please give it a break, now you're playing with semantics. They're configured in the BIOS setup, they're BIOS settings. Next you'll be telling me that the boot drive settings aren't BIOS settings, or the memory timing settings aren't BIOS settings. It's a UEFI BIOS, and those are settings for the UEFI!

You are 100% correct on this. I often use the term "UEFI BIOS" because it helps a lot of people understand what we are talking about although you are dead on correct in saying that "UEFI BIOS" is technically not even a thing.

I have had more than one person question what UEFI is but I when I use the term "UEFI BIOS" they seem to get it.

Maybe I should correct that to prevent teaching people incorrect terminology.

So, thanks, @pseymour, for making me re-evaluate this.

I guess I'm not too old to learn yet :-)
