[After crash] Pin to taskbar creates duplicates, everything seems messed up

Hi guys,

Today, when trying to backup my system drive for the first time (with EaseUS Todo Backup Free), my PC crashed rather violently (BSOD) and unexpectedly. Since the reboot, my taskbar looks and feels differently.

1. Now when I click on any of my pinned apps, the app just opens as a duplicate on the taskbar:

2025.09.15 - 05.28.13.webp

It happens to all the pinned apps.
I have tried unpinning and pinning again, even from the original app (not from a shortcut). Doesn't change anything.
I should mention that I am using StartAllBack (as you can probably see). Never had this issue before.

2. Also, when I open a new Explorer window, it goes to the right of the taskbar. Even if I drag it to the left (like you can see with the "TELECHARGEMENTS" window), if I close it then open it again, it goes again to the right. This wasn't the case before the crash, all Explorer windows stayed nicely on the left.

These are the two issues I'm facing right now, when everything used to work perfectly before that damn crash.

On the bright side, my PC definitely feels faster since the crash/reboot. Go figure! 😅

Thanks in advance for your help! 🙏

I would uninstall StartAllBack, restart, If the native taskbar works correctly, reinstall StartAllBAck. Download its latest version.

Thanks. I'll do it in a few hours, gotta sleep first (it's 6 AM here and I'm still up with this whold BSOD thing).

Also, I have noticed something weird with Firefox.
I have two Firefox installs: an old one which I don't use anymore (Firefox 88) and an up-to-date one (Firefox 142).
The two are completely independant : different folders, different profiles.
Well, now when the up-to-date is launched, a right-click shows and directs to... Firefox 88 ! 😳

2025.09.15 - 06.08.44.webp

However, I can confirm that Firefox 88 is NOT running, and that my profile, tabs, etc, are the correct ones (Firefox 142).
Something seems to be messed up.

When possible:

1) Add WMIC:

Hi, thanks for your help. Here's the link to the V2 Log Collector: zip file: 2.27 MB file on MEGA

I haven't done the WMIC & TuneUp Plus thing for the moment. I'm a bit afraid to mess with my registry right now.

My post-crash system looks stable, besides the aforementioned problems.

I'll try disabling StartAllBack and report back. I already have the latest version.

Most importantly, apparently I have a restore point merely some hours before the crash. Would it make sense to revert to that restore point, or could it be dangerous? My system feels faster right now, so...

2025.09.15 - 12.22.44.webp

At this point I'm afraid to do anything. Had even trouble sleeping last night. 😅
I have data backups, but I don't have ANY system backup.
Yesterday's backup was supposed to be the first full system backup. Why did it have to go wrong? 😖

Once this is solved, maybe I'll have to boot on a USB flash drive, run EaseUS Todo Backup from there and create the backup. Does that make sense?
The thing is, I don't see myself booting on a flash drive several times a week just to create full backups and differential backups. All this was supposed to be easy and painless!

EDIT - My "Firefox 88" issue seems to be fixed.

I had to remove the "Firefox 88" shortcut that was in my Start Menu folder (I had two shortcuts: "Firefox 88" and "Firefox").
Then I closed/opened Firefox.

What's weird is the taskbar looking for that "Firefox 88" shortcut FIRST instead of "Firefox". I don't get it.
The taskbar is supposed to show the app currently open, not another one. Having two shortcuts shouldn't be a problem.

Hi guys. I'm taking some time to process this and be very careful about it, because like I said, I currently don't have a backup of my system drive (it was the whole purpose of this operation prior to the BSOD).

I have temporarily disabled StartAllBack, and watched how Windows reacted.
- The taskbar behaves normally I guess, which tends to prove that the problem is within StartAllBack (enabling StartAllBack again brings the problem back). Maybe I should uninstall/reinstall it.
- However, I have noticed that in my Explorer windows, with StartAllBack disabled, my favorites don't appear anymore. Check the attached screenshot.

That of course is more problematic. I'd like my favorites back somehow. Could somebody please help?

I'm on it. About post #5, I see these steps in Tuneup Plus:

sfc /scannow
dism /online /cleanup-image /scanhealth
dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth
sfc /scannow (if the first scan finds problems)
chkdsk /scan

wmic recoveros get autoreboot
wmic recoveros set autoreboot = false
wmic recoveros get autoreboot

wmic recoveros get DebugInfoType
wmic recoveros set DebugInfoType = 7
wmic recoveros get DebugInfoType

wmic pagefile list /format:list

wmic Computersystem where name="%computername%" get AutomaticManagedPagefile
wmic Computersystem where name="%computername%" set AutomaticManagedPagefile=True
wmic Computersystem where name="%computername%" get AutomaticManagedPagefile

bcdedit /enum {badmemory}
Some thins I find completely normal (scanning disks, getting logs).
Other things I don't understand. Like wmic recoveros set autoreboot = falseor set AutomaticManagedPagefile=True. Why would it change those things?

I'm eager to comply, but I need to understand what will happen to my PC before executing an unknown batch script, and how long it may take. FYI I have a 2 TB system drive, and a 12 TB data drive that shouldn't even be scanned IMHO (I don't see how it would have anything to do with the BSOD which happened during a backup of the system drive).

Hello, Jose

The individual who is trying to help you is light years ahead of most of us here regarding BSOD issues.

You are encountering BSOD issues and that is their specialty. I would advise following their instructions to the letter.

The correct thread regarding your issue can be found here >> BSOD Crash Analysis

Wishing you the best. :-)

Thank you @Scannerman :-) I agree with you and I'm not discussing the process. I have just asked questions, which have remained unanswered, so that bothers me. I must emphasize that currently I don't have any system drive backup. So if ANYTHING goes wrong while I'm "following the instructions to the letter" and I can't boot anymore, how am I going to do? How would you guys even know? That's what puzzles me.

Like I said, "I'm eager to comply, but I need to understand what will happen to my PC before executing an unknown batch script, and how long it may take". That's all. :-)

Also, I don't understand your link. I see the Crash Analysis sub-forum, but nothing regarding my issue. Did I miss something? Sorry if that's obvious. ☺️

That's all. :-)

The subject material in that thread is vast. I would be surprised if there was nothing there that addressed your BSOD issue or at least something very similar. Howbeit, if a search produced nothing and zbook is comfortable with assisting you here, in this thread, then that is well and good. If you cannot boot at all anymore then I would venture that you have bigger problems, but clearly this is not the case. Evidently you just have some nasty junk on your OS causing a BSOD. This forum has a special thread for dealing with BSOD issues.

Microsoft is obligated by law to allow us one duplicate copy of our operating system so having a single clone of your OS is not unlawful. Personally, I recommend that you make one whenever possible. The argument against having a clone is lame at best. Even a faulty OS is better than no OS at all. That said having a clone does not replace having a system image, a backup, file history, or even restore points. Personally, I recommend doing all of these and keeping a clone on hand in case things get ugly. It really depends on how much you value your data.

IF for whatever reason you cannot make a backup or a clone of your faulty operating system but you can get your hands on an external hard drive and copy all your personal data and user files etc. to it you should at least be okay as far as personal data goes. That way if your operating system becomes completely unrecoverable you can reinstall it and copy back your personal files to the freshly installed operating system from the external hard drive.

IF it were me having this problem I would first try the restore points. I would already have had all my valuable personal data copied to another drive. Sometimes System Restore actually works! Once this was done I would work on removing the garbage from my operating system and do a disk cleanup and run DISM but that is me. One can analyze until they paralyze but sooner or later the issue needs to be addressed. OR not.

@zbook Are you aware that WMIC has been removed in 25h2?
Very last thing listed on this page What's new in Windows 11, version 25H2 for IT pros

Thx.

(somehow i'd not seen a notification or missed the @ notification)

At sometime all of scripts will need to be tested to see if adding WMIC is or is no long an option.

If adding WMIC is no longer an option then scripts will need to be rewritten.

Just saw dacrone's post > so adding WMIC appears to allow them to run and produce results
