Aggravating explorer.exe issue

I have a very random issue where explorer.exe becomes unresponsive. (no more than once or twice a day and then goes days before it happens again) When it happens, task manager does not show that explorer.exe or any other process or program as not responding. There's no pattern to what I'm doing when this happens, and event viewer gives me no leads. I've been troubleshooting this off and on for several weeks now using the MANY suggestions on the web, all the normal troubleshooting stuff, but the randomness of it makes it hard to do anything with it. It's not a huge issue as I made a keyboard shortcut to force stop and restart explorer, but it peeves me that I can't get to the bottom of it. I thought it was graphics related but it's happened using both the original and latest graphics driver. Anyone got any ideas? And is anyone else experiencing this?

I see the problem. Explorer.exe is rightfully embarrassed that you left a zero out of your Windows version number. :)

Never had a chance to check..., the Taskbar often freezes also.

Probably, cuz my Insider machine, which is p*ss poor on RAM, pretty much needs a reboot every time it happens!
Interestingly though, ever since I installed StartAllBack on the lappy, I haven't seen it there!

Have you tried clean boot state?
Yes, but it being so sporadic I can't run in minimum configuration for days on end waiting to see if it's going to happen. And to answer Anixx question, no there is no spike in ram or cpu usage. It just stops reacting. No indication of any kind about "not responding." Forcing explorer.exe to stop and restarting explore.exe or logging out and back in always fixes it...for a while.

Hey @Edwin if you want to save yourself some time, make yourself a shortcut somewhere to
C:\Windows\System32\cmd.exe /c taskkill /im explorer.exe /f & start explorer.exe
Name it and then assign a keyboard shortcut to it. You can then get explorer working again in an instant. It beats opening task manager and doing it manually.

I'll get sporadic explorer hangs or crashes also since going to Win 11. No idea why it does it but I keep a Restart Explorer option on my desktops right click context menu. Figured it was a Win 11 thing and been waiting for a windows update to hopefully fix it.

Ctrl/Alt/Del works for me for the odd times I'm on the Insider machine..., it's such a piece of junk! :cautious:

Have you checked the Control Panel --> Security and Maintenance --> Reliability Monitor
Thank you so much @FreeBooter for steering me to this. I never knew this function existed. Since I have kept no record of timestamps when this problem occurred, I can't correspond it with the faults in reliability monitor but I definitely see problems there with both Immersive Control Panel and LMS.exe which is a software component of Intel® Active Management Technology Local Manageability Service.
There is an entry in AUTORUNS for AMT pointing to lms.exe but I do not know if it is safe to disable it since I'm not sure how AMT interacts with the OS or what AMT actually does.
As for as the immersive control panel faults, how would I go about troubleshooting that?
There was only one fault listed in reliability monitor for explorer.exe

EDITED: I am attaching a word doc here with all the faults listed in Relaibility Monitor into a word document. Maybe they make more sense to some of you.

I would just make a backup, then do an In-Place upgrade.
By the time you get done doing everything required to troubleshoot and fix: Exception code: 0xc0000005
...you will have been able to do two In-Place upgrades.



Here is the short version of the In-place upgrade tutorial...

DISABLE non-Microsoft:
a) antivirus software
b) firewall software
c) drive encryption software

Make a full OS backup with a program like Macrium Reflect (free)
Macrium Software | Macrium Reflect Free

Go here and get the Windows 11 ISO (use the 3rd option), and save the ISO to your desktop.

Right click the ISO image and choose: MOUNT
Open File Explorer and you will see a new drive letter. It will "look" like a DVD optical drive.
Double click the new drive letter to open it.
Find setup.exe and double click it to start the in-place upgrade.

Choose the Keep personal files and apps option.

After it's all done... to UNmount the ISO image, right click the new drive letter and choose: EJECT.


The ONLY thing you will lose is some of your personalizations. Your programs and data will be intact.




You're getting errors in quite a few of the largest subsections of Windows.
The In-Place upgrade will repair anything wrong with Windows. Then, if the problem still exists, you'll have two choices...

1. Clean install... aka, start from scratch.
2. Troubleshoot all the drivers and 3rd party programs, which the In-Place upgrade doesn't repair.


This is not uncommon with a new OS.
MS and all the devs are running around trying to get everything working together.
There ARE ways to go through and manually repair things, but the In-Place upgrade takes about 40 mins total.
Repairing everything, could take a week or two.
