I've had this Dell for a few weeks now and just recently when it boots the bios now warns me. The first thing I did when I got it was check through Microsoft if this model was fully compatible. It gave me all green. So I don't know what this alert is about? Looking the model up it is fully compatible with Windows 11.

To explain it more straight forward, Dell support assist started giving the warning "Alert! TPM service not detected" almost every time I would boot up. Nothing for TPM was in security in bios. Continuing I could enter the OS but my pin at first had broken. I had to disable the Pin then re-enable it with a Pin again and then it worked from then on.

There was no way to re-enable TPM. Tpm.msc said that there wasn't a compatible one on the computer when there was one before. Device security and Security processor also couldn't detect the TPM. Powershell showed a lot of false's and also no ownership.

Device manager wouldn't show Security Devices. I did much later find that I can unhide hidden drivers. The TPM 2.0 module was shown there but greyed out. Opening it up showed an error 45. It said the component was not connected and to reconnect it (it's on the motherboard.)

Called Dell, they thought the motherboard needed replacing. Called Best Buy and after I explained it to her on the phone she thought it was also really weird for a very new model/laptop.

Edit: Returned the laptop to Best Buy. No one seemed to know what a TPM chip was but showing them the error at boot and the security section in bios being barren seemed to be enough to list it as defective. Hopefully the new one won't have an issue with the chip. Since I've tried resetting "factory", going back to an older image, flashing the bios, and more and nothing resolved it not appearing and staying in the bios settings and device manager, this was the only option left.

Edit: Just got the new one. I haven't yet upgraded to 11 but will after doing another backup of Windows10( must had forgotten to last time). I confirmed TPM is working and is ready for use. TPM.msc was no longer barren and everything seems to be detected. I did check in the bios and I guess for the 3501 model, there is no check mark to enable or disable TPM through bios. Security still only shows secure wipe.

Hopefully final edit: Upgraded to 11 and TPM is still on. Hopefully it'll stay that way. I'm going to keep my system encrypted.

In the search box type Run and in the search results above open the Run app. In the Run box type tpm.msc. The result will tell you if a tpm is detected by the OS and what kind it is. When you press the power button are your short pressing it to put it to sleep or long pressing to shut it down?

Yeah I short pressed the power button. I guess the login screen has a screen timeout I wasn't aware of.
When I run it it says compatible TPM cannot be found. It says to verify it has 1.2 or higher from BIOS. I can't find where TPM is in the BIOS screen at all. So I don't really get why I would have gotten the all green and push to go to 11 when it's not there? It just today warned me about no TPM being detected.

In Dell bios TPM is located in the Security section.

In the Maintenance section of the bios, verify that the box Allow bios downgrade is checked. Go to Dell. Make SURE you enter the correct service tag for your machine. (Verify that the service tag stamped on your case is the same one listed in the General section of the bios)
Download the previous bios update and flash it. Once it's flashed again verify that the bios indeed shows the new bios took. Then in bios, reset bios to default. Does it detect the TPM then? If not, then contact Dell because it would appear your bios chip is malfunctioning.

I have a question. Did you manually download the new bios, update it through Support Assist, or use the Dell Command Update app that came on the computer? Or through windows update?

I found this statement on the Dell site about your laptop model Once the BIOS is upgraded, you cannot downgrade the BIOS to versions earlier than 1.6.0 due to downgrade restrictions on Dell Inspiron 3501, Vostro 3400, and 3500 systems. BIOS downgrades are restricted when there are security updates and important fixes. Whichever of the several bios you try to reflash don't go earlier than 1.6.

Sorry for the late reply. Yes, the 1.9 version I did manually update to through Dell.
I will try the Bios downgrade. I'm not sure what exact version it was on when I first got the computer but it did update to 1.8 through Windows Update before I installed Windows 11.

@The-Hive What bios version is that Inspiron? We may have the same model but different configs. Mine has the Intel Iris Xe chip.

So, the 1.9 I see in Windows Update is an update for the one I already have installed? That's why I've been ignoring it for now. Don't want to reflash the BIOS to a version I already have installed. Also I checked with command prompt and my motherboard model is 0XGX0C.

I still haven't done anything big yet but after looking around tried to unplug my laptop, turn it off, leave it and then turn it back on. That time I didn't get the TPM warning but it still won't use PIN. My PIN has been working only until today and I think that has also to do with TPM right? Something weird has happened between last night and today. I went to device security and it's saying my computer doesn't support it at all? But it does as it's been using the Windows Hello PIN and my drive was encrypted with BitLocker when I first set up the computer which I decrypted and disabled.

Have you got an image you can go back to and start again?
The only way an image would help her if the bios update caused the problem is IF the option in bios "save to disk" is selected and IF whatever bios she upgraded from is 1.6 or later. Somehow, Dell has got their bios hard-coded when it comes to security updates so it will refuse to go any lower, backed up to disk or no. I recently ran into a such similar issue. (it wasn't regarding TPM though) There was absolutely NO way I could revert back to an earlier bios. Dell ended up sending a technician to replace the motherboard. When he flashed the bios, he used the earlier version. I guess I ended up being a guinea pig for Dell because they issued another 'urgent' update 2 days later.

On these new Dells, they are issuing bios updates almost every month. For her laptop there have been 5 updates since May. On mine there have been 6. 5 or 6 bios updates in as many months is not a good indication to me that Dell is really checking these new bios very well before they release them.

To make matters worse for consumers that know no better, these bios updates are now showing up alongside driver updates in Windows Update. It's a screwed up mess.

Now, if the problem is OS related, then a backup would help her.

I don't remember what bios version it was originally but it was on 1.8 for a while after I installed all Windows Updates when I got it set up. I think it was last week that I updated to 1.9 as well as a graphics driver update that helped fix a weird display glitch. So I don't know if there was ever anything showed other than this stuff on security in Bios before these other Bios updates. Sorry I can't show it any larger but it just shows a wipe option in security. Unless TPM is located elsewhere....obviously Microsoft did successfully detect TPM with their compatability software on Win 10 which it came with.

You're right. I'm a she.

Is that the only listing under security?
