All my cursor images replaced by graphics program icon. My fault.

Without thinking (a natural state for me sometimes), when I wanted to look at a large image of a particular cursor in Windows\cursors, I selected one of my graphics programs in the Open With panel, and didn't notice that the box was checked for Always open ... Of course, now, when I look in the cursors folder, all of the cursor images are replaced by the program's icon.

Is there any quick and easy way to revert that change, or do I have to do a repair install (which might not change file associations, I suppose)?

That's a Firefox icon. See what happens if you select explorer.exe in the program picker. There must also be a command line for resetting program associations to defaults for particular file types, no reinstall should be necessary.

Good idea, but no go. Error popup says Program ... can't be associated with a file type.

Perhaps Ctrl+A to select all files or Ctrl and click on the ones in question, then right click and hit properties, You should get this box , image_2021-10-16_022814.pngJust hit change and it should let you choose for all selected

If I choose another program, the Firefox icons will just be replaced by that program's icon.

I have not tested this, but perhaps you can check the following registry entries and see if they have been changed. In particular the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.cur\PersistentHandler section:

@Singleton is on the right track, but the place in the registry you need to look is under HKEY_CURRENT_USER because this association is a personal setting for each user.

The place to look is Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.cur

1634358279130.png

To put it back to a pristine 'never been set' state, delete a and MRUList in the key OpenWithList, and delete both the keys OpenWithProgids and UserChoice under the .cur key. You should leave the .cur key and its OpenWithList, just containing (Default) (value not set).

The change will take effect after you sign out and back in, restart Explorer, or restart the PC.

@Bree @Singleton

I've expressed my appreciation with the Like icon already, but I want to thank you both for pitching in with easy solutions for this silly little problem. Singleton, you were very close. Bree, you were spot on (as usual)!

Funny: In a year, I maybe use that cursors folder once, tops. This one (first) time in there on W11, I did a dumb thing. Live and learn. Bree, you're a great teacher.

And thanks to you other guys who came out of nowhere and gave it a shot. The support from this group is outstanding.
