This tutorial will show you how to allow or block a family member in your Microsoft Family group to sign in to your Windows 11 device.

A family group is a set of individuals connected through the Microsoft Family Safety app on their Windows 10, Windows 11, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, or Android and iOS mobile devices. Establishing a family group is an easy, effective way to encourage healthy online habits and manage busy schedules.

Microsoft Family Safety makes it easy to allow members of your family group to sign in to your Windows 11 device.

Reference:

You must be signed in to Windows 11 with a Microsoft account that is an administrator, and your Microsoft account must be an organizer in your Microsoft Family group to allow or block family members to sign in to your Windows 11 device.

Contents

  • Option One: Allow Microsoft Family Member to Sign In to your Windows 11 device
  • Option Two: Block Microsoft Family Member from Signing In to your Windows 11 device

Option One

Allow Microsoft Family Member to Sign In to your Windows 11 device

This option will add the family member's Microsoft account as an account on your Windows 11 device. When the family member signs in to your device for the first time, a user profile folder will be created for their account in the "C:\Users" folder.

If you already allowed a family member's Microsoft account to sign in to your Windows 11 device and used Option Two to block sign in for this account, then this option will only enable their account again to allow sign in on your device instead.

1 Open Settings (Win+I).

2 Click/tap on Accounts on the left side, and click/tap on Family on the right side under "Account settings". (see screenshot below)

3 Click/tap on the added family member you want to expand it open, and click/tap on Allow sign in. (see screenshot below)

4 Click/tap on Allow to confirm. (see screenshot below)

5 Click/tap on Change account type if you want to change this account to be a Standard User or Administrator on your Windows 11 device. (see screenshots below)

The account type created for this family member will be a Standard User by default.

If the family member is a member and not organizer in your family group, then Family features may not work properly if this family member’s account type is set as Administrator.

Option Two

Block Microsoft Family Member from Signing In to your Windows 11 device

This option will disable the family member's Microsoft account previously allowed to sign-in on your Windows 11 device.

1 Open Settings (Win+I).

2 Click/tap on Accounts on the left side, and click/tap on Family on the right side under "Account settings". (see screenshot below)
