Solved Am I right that 'Internet speed' is actually 'Bandwidth'?

New network speed feature in the Network icon is used instead of the "classic" www.speedtest.net by Ookla. I am not sure, but I think there is a little difference between the two. I think this is because they use different gateways to connect and measure speed or because they use a different method.

For example, Windows 11 network speed measured my download at 243.35 Mbps and my upload at 154.09 Mbps while a few seconds later Ookla measured my download at 244.58 Mbps and my upload at 147.80 Mbps. No big deal, but which one you consider more reliable?
There is no such thing as an absolute Internet speed test. For example, Speedtest will probably measure the speed between you and different servers than other speed tests. The main use for Internet speed tests is for comparison for different equipment you have currently and over time.

Of course the actual speed number does make a difference if it is not as fast as expected. For example, if you pay for Gigabit Internet and your wired speed is only 500Mbps then you need to find out what the problem is.

There is a physical reason for the asymmetry for copper (i.e. non-optical) asymmetry. There is a lot of electrical noise at the ISP POP center because of all of the lines and electrical and electronic equipment. At a residential premise there is not nearly as much electrical noise. This results in the signal to noise ratio (S/N) of a transmission received at the ISP being lower than a transmission from the ISP received at a residence,. The higher the S/N of a received transmission, the greater the bandwidth that can be received. As a result of this S/N asymmetry, upload bandwidth is lower than download bandwidth.

Fiber optics does not have this issue because it is not susceptible to electrical noise so the S/N is symmetric.
Likely also the reason it is easier for me to get 1GB both up and down which is really all I need for this household.

Gave Dell touch screen with Windows 11 to daughter and got me an OTVOC. Being a PC builder I own many desktop PCs as well. I am a father of five providing PCs, laptops, and tablets for all my family, most of which I have modified, rebuilt, or simply built from scratch. I do not own a cell phone, never have, never will.
I am 100% certain that ISPs will charge more for symmetrical speeds, even if the cost is the same to them. No thanks, for the time being I don't need too high upload speed, why pay extra for it?
I was paying 50 dollars more per month for internet that gave me less than 1GB down and only 120MB up. as compared to fiber that now gives me closer to 1GB both up and down. In my case I got more for less.

As you can see below I have a lot of options. Currently I have Xfinity 2Gbps. The reason I stay with cable is because only it has traditional TV. Fiber only has streaming. My wife really likes what we have so does not want to change to anything else. That means that the matter is settled even though we could probably save a lot of money by going with fiber.

BTW, even though fiber is symmetrical in that the download and upload speeds are the same it really is not important to most people. Most of us need is a good download speed. A fast upload speed is of little real use.
