He meant two M.2 NVMe ports.
It will support two of those SSDs that look like RAM sticks. :-)

So 1TB of Evo Pro, would be be the D Data drive.

Thanks for the confirmation.

As for the partitions... you can make them... whatever you want.

You could use the 512GB for C, D, E
Then use the 1TB for F, G, H

With GPT disks you can put something like 128 partitions on a disk.
So... you just put whatever you... want. :)

You can make the 512GB just C, and then make the 1TB D and E, or D and E and F, or just D, or D, E, F, G, H, etc...
Whatever you want.

Here's you magic partitioning wand...

You can do most of these things with Disk Management, but it's always a good idea to have a 2nd tool.
Sometimes Disk Management says: You can't do that. That's when a partitioning tool comes in handy.

For the average domestic user, RAID is over complicated.

Having two SSDs is great though, as you can use 1st SSD for OS+programs and second for data.
This gives ability to optimise backup strategies (storage versus effort).

I regularly make image backups of 1st SSD to 2nd SSD.

I make backups of critical data on 2nd drive to Onedrive and an external usb drive regularly.

Important but not absolutely critical data gets backed to external usb drive regularly, and cloud when I can be bothered).

Non critical data e.g. downloads of stuff I can redownload (videos mostly, and buk of storage), gets backed up to external drives now and then (when I can be bothered).

Raid is really designed for commercial use to ensure minimum (as near as possible) impact of a drive failure (mostly in a multi-user environment).

You can set the whole disk as MBR or GPT.
On Windows 11, they will be GPT.
This is different from partitioning.

The difference between setting the whole disk as MBR or GPT

Image1.png

Just about all disks, SSD, HDD, etc., will be set as GPT, these days.
You don't really have to worry about it.

Open a command prompt as admin, and type these two commands... one at a time...

diskpart
list disk

Image1.png

Image1.png

As you can see... partitions are just how you divide up the individual disks.
And, on GPT disks, you can have up to 128 partitions (drive letters).

You can set the whole disk as MBR or GPT.
On Windows 11, they will be GPT.
This is different from partitioning.

The difference between setting the whole disk as MBR or GPT

Just about all disks, SSD, HDD, etc., will be set as GPT, these days.
You don't really have to worry about it.

Open a command prompt as admin, and type these two commands... one at a time...

diskpart
list disk

As you can see... partitions are just how you divide up the individual disks.
And, on GPT disks, you can have up to 128 partitions (drive letters).
It is only the OS drive that has to be formatted as GPT in Windows 11.

You can do either on data drives.

Well considering the sizes of the storage drives these days... I would think most would choose GPT. :-)

You mean it won't support M2 NVME?

Thanks.
Yes it will, on Dell laptops make sure you have the mounting post for the 2nd drive actually present. Probably all Alienware laptops are missing this and you have to buy separately.

Which would be better as a D data drive. Evo, Evo plus or Evo Pro?

AFAIK there are no "Evo Pro" models. I think what you are referring to is just called "PRO", but you have to look at all the various specs on each different product, not just rely on the name of the model nor on a part of the name. Even the total storage capacity number can make a difference as for how big are some of the other numbers, benchmark results, measurements, etc.. E.g., the 2TB version of the 980 Pro has 1200 TBW, the 1TB version of it has 600 TBW.

That being said, for most users under every day normal circumstances, I think the question of whether to use this or that (modern advanced) SSD as a "data drive" comes from a concept that has become fairly outdated by now. Unless you are limited by certain, specific, types of heavy workload, you can put user data on the same modern advanced SSD as the Windows OS and not notice any real performance bottleneck. The same also applies to the endurance factor. 600 TBW is enough for the vast majority of users. It translates to writing, on average, a whopping 328.8GB of data per day. I would be more concerned about things like the time it would take to keep moving data back and forth between all the various partitions and how frequently you would actually end up having to wait for data to be transferred. (Some people might want to restore their whole C: partition from an image file every couple of minutes so that it matches the frequency at which they usually tell you how much they love Macrium, and so they don't want to store any user data in a folder on their C: partition at all.)

You mean to imply larger size are faster.. correct.
The Inspiron 5510 came with a 512.
So 1TB would be good choice?
It's an internal not a USB option for the 2nd.

Thanks.
Truthfully you will NOT see a big (if any) speed difference between a 512gig and 1TB gig SSD/NVMe drive. Some benchmark program "might" show a "slight" difference, but you WILL NOT notice it is real word usage. I have both a Samsung 512 and 1TB NVMe drive in my system, and both spit out roughly the same numbers...

Screenshot 2022-01-13 172026.pngScreenshot 2022-01-13 172111.png

The 512gig drive is my OS drive, the 1TB drive is my photography drive. Anyway, I agree with getting the biggest drive you can afford, but don't base size Soley on speed numbers. Also be aware performance can also be affected by amount of free space left on the drive - a drive half full will perform better than a drive near full.

Peace

Thanks for explaining in depth.

My laptop came with 1 NvME M.2 SSD 512 GB, has the option of attaching another internal NvME.

Presently have it partitioned, C: W11; 200 GB/ occupied 40 GB and D: Data: Empty.

What would your expert recommendations' be for install a secondary SSD 512 or 1 TB in size?

Thanks again!
