I still play old Popcap games from Windows 98, such as Banana Bugs, Bejeweled 3, Water Bugs, Chuzzle Deluxe, Peggle Deluxe and others. I still play Lose your marbles from Plus! for Windows 98 and many other old games. They all install and work fine on Windows 11.

I'm still running Windows XP as a VM --I've some old Vinyl record cutting hardware which will only run on XP !!! plus the software that I got years ago with that also has a "perpetual license" to create Vinyls from music. Modern software is hideously expensive with for small individuals really hefty "usage fees" . (originally getting blanks was a problem but easy now from China, Korea etc).

I also have a load of stuff on Minidiscs - the XP system plays those too and can copy to vinyl or cd. I sometimes as a "little extra earner" create bespoke vinyls for people LP's / 45's including EP's. I don't though bother with 78's !!! but could do them too.

It doesn't matter that to share files with "outside" the VM one needs SMBV1 - the VM police's access to "the wider outside" so not a security issue. The XP system is the last full release at SP3 plus some of the "unofficial" SP4 mods. Note though USB2 is max and a SATA interface can be added - but as it's on a VM it doesn't matter about SATA or IDE for its internal disk.

Started some 30 years ago with PSP 4.12 (shareware). When I bought PSP 7.04 I never felt the need for anything newer :D

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    My SYSTEM FIVE is a Dell Latitude 3190 2-in-1, Pentium Silver N5030, 8GB RAM, 1TB NVMe ssd, supported device running Windows 11 Pro, plus Insider Beta, Dev, and Canary builds (and a few others) as a native boot .vhdx.

    My SYSTEM SIX is a Dell Latitude 5550, Core Ultra 7 165H, 64GB RAM, 1TB NVMe SSD, supported device, Windows 11 Pro 24H2, Hyper-V host machine. Updated to 25H2 on 30th September 2025.

    My SYSTEM SEVEN is a Lenovo Thinkpad T580, Intel Core i7-8650U, 16GB RAM, 512GB NVMe SSD + 2nd 512GB NVMe SSD, a supported device for Windows 11. This is my current general purpose 'main machine'. The installed Windows 11 Home from my System One has been migrated to this machine.
Up to Windows 7 I could manually install the Windows XP drivers (for Windows 7 32-bit) or the Windows XP x64 drivers (for Windows 7 64-bit) for my rather old Iomega ZIP-100 parallel drive. Due to changes in the parallel port drivers, the computer cannot detect the drive in Windows 8/10/11, so I cannot force install these drivers as nothing appears in Device Manager. So I use a virtual machine running Windows XP and I pass control of the parallel port to the guest so Windows XP can detect and use the drive! I did the same trick for my father's scanner that wouldn't work properly on Windows 11 and VueScan didn't have it in its database.

The OP prompted me to have a go at Xquest (v2) which runs happily on W10 under DosBox. It appears I am not as nimble as I was in 1994 when I had v1 running on a 286 - remarkable that it could handle so many sprites at once. V2 came out in 1996 and is trickier - I don't think I shall be getting any high scores any time soon....

I have been using Parsons Daily Journal 2.0 since 4/1/1996, it’s a 1994 16-bit app. & will run on a x86 Windows OS with some prodding.
I add entries every week & save all my entries & tabulations every year as a .pdf.
I did get it installed on Windows 11 on Hyper-V in a x86 client.
I found a DJ 3.0 & tested it, it wont install on x64 either.

I remember playing an old games programmed in QBasic with two monkeys that tried to hit one another with bananas. Each player had to calculate the angle and strength before throwing. I can still play it in DosBox.

To run it in Windows 11 without DosBox running Windows 3.1 or a virtual machine, you can install WineVDM which is an alternative of good old NTVDM and work in 64-bit Windows versions including Windows 11!

Beware. I recently tried to install PSP 12.0 which installed a driver W11 didn't like then failed to boot. Had to recover from my Reflect backup.

I have all those games on the PC, also the card games like spider solitaire, minesweeper, etc. All the stuff that used to come free, now you have to pay for most them if I recall correctly.
