You sure it was one of these? I currently have two of them running in my basement and they run Windows 10 just fine. In fact, one of them runs Win 11 better than my main! Never had to concern myself with a battery pack on these beasts but I did upgrade one to a bigger power supply for a graphics card. Windows 3.x was 16-bit software that ran as a DOS program, so obviously it can't run in a 64-bit OS like Windows 10 or Windows 11.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    I've now clean installed 25H2 and used Garlin's scripts to update Secure Boot to CA 2023 and revoke the PCA 2011 certificates. It's new role is to test secure boot issues.

Windows 8 followed by Windows 8.1 and the Windows phones were the greatest thing MS ever released. It's a shame that MS didn't stand behind them and chose to abandon them instead. None of my Android phones before or after I owned my Windows phones even came close in comparison. As for Windows 11 on my computers I've only had minor problems that eventually got fixed. You will hear me complain about Windows 11 at times but in the end, I prefer Windows 11 over all of the previous version I have used. To be honest, with all the different hardware and software combinations we can use, I feel Windows does a very good job. I have and will in the future complain when Windows doesn't work the way I think it should but I see it as a way for MS to get a real idea of what's going on and for me to release some steam. I'm more than sure that some of the MS team visit this site to find out what problems users are having.

Windows 11 can be "persuaded" to run on very cheap, but powerful, Windows 10 Xeon workstations, so I'm happy with it.

I'm a Linux dude by nature/work, but have have Windows 11 devices, for software like Office 365, Citrix, Zoom, Teams, Skype.

No need to buy expensive new hardware, to run Windows 11.

I have a Windows 10 ready work station and it will run a Xeon chip. Of course, I would have to flash the BIOS and change my chip to make it do that, but this would mean that I would also have to buy expensive 'new' hardware. I'll just settle for this gimped version of Win 11 instead. Hopefully secure boot will stop killing my Linux one day. Only time will tell.

Yesterday, I just dragged out my Asus P6T with the Xeon 5690 running @4.3 GHz and installed 11 Pro on it. It's MBR, but it seems to be as efficient as my ASRock 4790K machine, but it's hard to tell since I only surf with all my PC's.

No worries. I think you're referring to a laptop and Dell made a whole lot of different XPS lines. My wife actually uses one of the higher end units for field work and the lab. It houses some sort of double battery pack for longevity and is as tough as nails. The sound on it is incredible. Not the least bit tinny sounding. It's running Windows 10. I haven't had to fix it for her since I installed the OS on it for her. She guards it with her life. lol

Reading through this thread I am shocked at how many people like Windows 11
I think apps suck and are stupid, who wants to have to customize an app for every user?
I am looking at you Notepad
And when people speak about a modern GUI, I want to vomit, who cares what is looks like?
Does it work, and where did they move this x#x# adjustment now?
And can we talk about the taskbar? What a POS
But I am sure if you like Windows 11, you leave the start button in the middle of the screen on boot, then watch it move left with every program you open...
I have a good one for you, screw up the search engine and see how fast your machine moves through File Manager
This is not an upgrade from 10
I hope Windows 12 is better, but somehow, I doubt it

I have found, running Windows 11 on fairly modern machines (TPM2, native NVME, UEFI bios, DDR4), results in the OS inteliigently optimizing performance, to a surprising extent.

I am with you on this, RNR. The first thing I did when I installed Windows 11 on my Win 11 ready laptop was figure out how to move the startup button to the far left where it belongs. Notepad is a nightmare and after a critical update I had to reconfigure it all over again but it would seem little lasts with Win 11. As for the GUI, well I do like an esthetic interface and it's too bad Aero isn't a thing anymore. Admittedly, it isn't essential but there is precious little about the Win 11 GUI that strikes me as phenomenal. Double clicking on the computer icon just to get to "manager" is particularly annoying for me because I access device manager and disc management often. What features would you like to see in Windows 12?

I am a father of five providing PCs, laptops, and tablets for all my family, most of which I have modified, rebuilt, or simply built from scratch. I do not own a cell phone, never have, never will.
