Solved Asking for some insight about SD cards


Considering @cereberus thoughts, perhaps this is a better solution at a more reasonable price... SAMSUNG T7 2TB, Portable SSD ($128). The 1TB version is $80 bucks ($79.99).

I have a 1TB version and love it. Much better than using a SD card which both my laptops support. Plus it has software to lock the drive. And... no need to open the PC to install another drive ;-)

I can't speak for the OP, but "my" reply was based on the fact that they specifically talked SD cards, posted images on SD cards. Given that, they may not have realized you were talking something totally different.

microSD cards are good where small size is important. An example is your cell phone.
SD cards are good when ease of handing is important. An example is a professional video camera.

Sandisk has microSD and SD cards at a number of price points with corresponding performance differences. It is up to the buyer to determine what their needs are. For example...
  • A casual buyer might consider price more important so would buy accordingly.
  • A professional with a 4K video camera might opt for the fastest card he can buy.
SD cards have come a long way. This card was good 21 years ago. Tested speeds: Read 1.01 MB/s | Write: 0.75 MB/s

If you are price conscious, you have to look at what you need it for. Different classes of cards have different applications for better results. For example, if you use the Sandisk Ulltra (center photo) on a 4K dashcam, it will work but you will often get an error message because the speed of the card does not comply with the speed you need to write a 4K video. So you have to get a Sandisk Extreme for that purpose.
But in your case, you are good with the Sandisk Ultra if you are not gonna deal a lot with 4K videos.
SD cards are usually for high-end DSLRs and they also vary in speeds depending on your device requirement. But of course there is no stopping you from using it on your laptop. It will work like everything else.

I have a 1TB T7 and like you, I love it. If I'm not mistaken I paid more for my 1TB drive than the price of that 2TB drive. Looks tempting. :-)

My use:
Micro SD required by my DJI Drone. I use SanDisk Extreme.
Standard SD required by my Digital Cameras. I use SanDisk Extreme.
Portable SSDs for my computer. I use two 2TB Samsung T7 Shield Portable SSDs for part of my backup strategy.

I've never had any of these devices fail.

Lexar, not so much, I've had Lexar's cough out on me.

Interesting to note:
Some phones are weird..., my old Zenfone bragged of supporting a 512GB MicroSD card, but, once inside the phone, it would only 'see' 256GB, so do your homework in that respect!

I only use them in the three devices I own that only excepts them. My digital camera and my two dash cams.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

Same here with SanDisk and Samsung. I've never had either one fail.

If memory serves (pun intended) my first SD card was a SanDisk. Since then I've bought many SD cards, Flash Drives, and SSD's from that company with narry a failure. The only hard failure I've ever had, with any such device was a PNY SSD.
I really like the SD card, regardless of price or performance claims, because it's so easy to handle, and get in and out of my digital camera, etc.
And as far as the way they perform.....they are like small, flat, Flash Drives. I even have one formatted, and set up to boot my PC into my Backup Program. That was just for fun, because many PC's will not boot from such a device.
It's too bad that some will call an SD card Legacy or Old School. They are truly very handy little devices.
The highest capacity SD card that I own is a 16GB that I use in my little digital camera. I have no need or desire for the really high capacity cards.

And since the OP asked for recommendations regarding brands for NVME drives, one could assume that the OP was reconsidering SD cards as their only option. The only advantage of SD card over USB drive is that the SD card would nearly be completely internal to the laptop, whereas a USB drive would be hanging out of a USB port.
