OS
Windows 11 Pro for Workstations
Windows version: Win 11, 24H2, (26100.4946)
Edge version: 140.0.3485.54

For years i have used edge://flags to access settings inside Edge to set the Backspace-key on my keyboard to the Go back command. I do this since it´s imho more convinient that using Alt+Left Arrow when browsing.

Today i received an update to Edge and it is now updated to version 140.0.3485.54 and i noticed right away that my Backspace-key no longer execute the Go back command. The short story is that it´s no longer possible to assign the Backspace-key to Go back, at least Assigns the Backspace key to go back a page is gone from the the Experiments tab now.

Does anyone know how to get the Backspace-key assigned to the Go back command today?

Maybe the extension for Chrome will work.

It will probaly work as expected, but short after i posted i found this and it works: Bspace - Backspace to go Back - Microsoft Edge Addons (Bspace - Backspace to go Back)

But it would be great to have the ability to customize things like this without any addons. I have installed similar addons before and then one year later when reinstalling the computer the addon can no longer be found and the hunt for a similar one starts. I think it was great to use a method that works everytime, until yesterday...

I program my mouse to use one of the right thumb buttons for backspace, the other for closing the window.

It seems that i cannot do that on my Contour RollerMouse Red. :)

Try SharpKeys, it remaps the keys in the registry without adding any software.

Yes, i already use that for other things but you cannot change keyboard shortcuts for any software with it. SharpKeys is great for mapping lets say Numlock to launch Calculator but you cannot change Numlock, or any other key, to go back one step in Edge. Or can you? :)

Many mice come with programmable buttons that default to back and forward in an Internet browser. I looked and my Logitech G305 actually had those as defaults, so I just changed the forward one to close window.

I use Close Window a lot since when I'm browsing something like a shopping site, I hold Ctrl when I select a product link. That way I can just flick my thumb, close that window and be back to the product list.
