Understand that even though a Z170 board does have firmaware TPM, that means nothing if the processors isn't supported.

I have both a Z170 and Z270 Gigabyte board and both have firmware TPM (PTT) enabled in the BIOS but since the motherboard itself does NOT support 8th gen CPU's Window 11 won't be supported because of the CPU, not TPM.

Point? Enabling/having TPM means nothing if the CPU isn't supported as well. Yeah, for beta testing purposes Windows 11 is allowed to run on these machines no as long as TPM is enabled, but cone the final release, the CPU is also going to have to be supported!

On another point, I find it curious there are many "system builders" that don't know how to navigate a BIOS to setup their system. This tells me many are just plugging in cards and not paying much attention to the BIOS settings. Not a great way to get the best performance out of a system.

I see the same with RAM and XMP - many buy high speed RAM, install in their system and wonder why they aren't getting the speed they paid for. The simple answer is to enable XMP - yet many simply have no idea what XMP does or that they need to enable it got get those high speeds they paid for - Example 3600MHz.

Point? If you're going to build your own systems, learn the BIOS as well. Also "read" your owner's manual.

I've been planning on buying a Gigabyte or ASUS B550 board to upgrade my old desktop, but when I looked through the ASUS post, I did not see any B550 boards listed. I certainly do not want to buy this and then have to scrounge around for a TPM module.

So, does anyone know if the AMD B550 boards will run Win 11?

UPDATE: thanks to BunnyJ and clam1952 for pointing me to the newer ASUS thread. I see there that is it supported.

How are you certain of that ?

Like I mentioned at the bottom of my phrase these options are not for novices. I've done bios mods in the past and it can be tricky and can result in a bricked motherboard. The first option from reddit is not for a Z170-P but an A. I haven't tested can't approve or disapprove it .

The option from WinRaid suggest how to see if the bios version you check has PTT or dPTM settings. One user has seen it in his bios version and gives details on how to find it.

I've known Fernando for many years and his site is legit.

That doesn't mean his methods are applicable here as in this case where a "BIOS mod" is NOT needed to get or enable TPM. Especially on a modern motherboard with a Z170 chipset.

Sort of sounds like you're asked to crawl through a rabbit hole while digging through 10 feet of concrete up a 45 degree incline coming out the other side just to collect a flower when all you had to do was walk across the street and pick it up. Impressive feat for something not required

Like Clam1952 mentioned, it's in the 3805 version but he needed to enable Virtualization Technology to see it. That's not a mod, it's a hidden setting that is there, you just have to find it. I have all the Asus versions except the 170 series so I can't see it. let's get one thing right, some bios mods are just to show some integrated codes in bios files that don't appear in the stock bios. For some of us they can be very useful.

I have an Asus Rog G46VW laptop with an Ivy bridge extreme 3920XM I7. Asus has very limited bios features for this laptop. I installed a bios mod that enabled a lot of bios settings that don't show on the stock bios. It's not added code, it's hidden but not activated. With this bios mod I can
UNLOCK's Chipset menu and hidden options for CPU and memory overclocking and adjustable timings. Overclock CPU Boost Multipliers Up to 4 multipliers and a whole bunch of other useful settings.

As with the TPM discussion some bios mods will show TPM activation that is already in bios code but does not show. You really summed it up well with this discussion, even if you can mod the bios to show TPM activation what's the use if CPU can't run.

It reminds me of a friend that had a 73 Chevy Vega. He decided to put a 350LT engine in it but had to pour lead in the fenders to keep it from lifting on starts and make all sort sorts of mods to get the car to work with that engine.

Why all the hassle? He loved that car. yeah, some will climb any mountain swim across any ocean just for a flower.

Yep, TPM means nothing if Microsoft insists Windows 11 also needs a supported CPU (currently 8th gen).

Also, for clarity, a mod is where you modify something from its original design/function. The is no need to modify a BIOS to get (PTT) TPM. It's either there or it isn't. If it's there it just needs to be enabled. That's not a mod that's a configuration change.

And though I've never owned or used an Asus motherboard, I'm 99.999 percent sure an Asus motherboard with a Z170 chipset works the same as my Gigabyte Z170/Z270, and Z390 board's.... go into the BIOS find the TPM (PTT) setting and enable it. No modifications needed.

BTW... (addressing clam1952 question) My PC does not meet minimum requirements in .160

And laptops are a different animal where they are configured at the factory with certain BIOS features or setting locked or hidden from the end user. With that, I'm also 99.9% sure all laptops today (since 2013?) have TPM enabled since laptops are pretty much mobile devices, thus making them easy prey for thieves.

Sorry, Called them mods for 20 years. My English isn't always at it's finest. I'll try to use the right word for for the few years I have left.

Asus has updated its default setting for the PTT and fTPM option from off to on - not sure if its a mod or something else

On my new ASUS Q370M-C MB it came w/ Bios Revision 2811
Gave me a choice between "Discreet TPM" & "Firmware TPM"

Usually when you have both choices it's because you have the CPU dPTM and the chip (firmware).

The CPU is a Intel core i7-9700k Coffee lake
& the chipset is a Intel Q370

You have a hardware based TPM chip on the board and your CPU supports it so you have a choice between one or the other.

It appears I actually have both HW & Firmware or HW that also has firmware choice?

That is an odd looking bios. Most of them are pretty nowadays.

For simplicity of the thread/post that's called a BIOS update

Mod per our conversation (Zardoc and myself) is what I'd call those instructions (per Zardoc's statement) posted in post #98.

Just a matter of semantics. When I hear mod, I think modifications... not updates or setting changes :)
