Hello !

Installed windows 11 on my pc. Had windows 10 earlier with my legacy ATI Radeon HD 4650 with catalyst control center all working fine.
Now, ATI card doesn't show anything on the screen. The device manager merely shows 'ATI HD 4600 series'. I tried everything from uninstalling device, disabling driver signature enforcement and installing Catalyst Control center with AMD drivers from the setup. Nothing seems to work.

For now, my onboard Intel Graphics 630 is what I'm using with the ATI just being detected but not projecting any display output.

Kindly help me out since buying a new card is out of my budget.

According to the support page the last driver available for that card was Windows 8 so I wouldn't get my hopes up that it will work. However, attempt to uninstall catalyst control center to see if it makes a difference. Then restart. Windows may still recognize the card or it may install a default MS driver in which case you won't be able to select its maximum resolution.

I don't understand WDDM driver requirements, but the stated requirement for Windows 11 is WDDM 2.0 or later. (For Windows 10, it was WDDM 1.0. If memory serves, that goes back to Windows XP.) The level of the latest drivers for the HD 4650 appears to be WDDM 1.3 or older.

I think you have 3 choices: continue using the integrated graphics, go back to Windows 10, or buy a different graphics card.

I didn't say "new" graphics card, because you might consider used (like eBay). Even a card like an nVidia GT 710 would outperform the 4650. I'd suggest a GT 730 over the 710, though; it might not cost more.

I checked Newegg to see if there are any inexpensive AMD cards listed that support DX12, but I didn't spot any.

Thanks for the reply. Is there a way to force Windows 11 to use WDMM 1.0 like windows 10? - Any fix regarding this in any way up until I get a new Graphics card ?

As far as I know, no.

I'm curious as to what would happen if 11 was installed as an update over 10.

At a guess, you'd get the Microsoft Basic drivers. They'd run, but not as well as hardware specific drivers.

NO bobkn!
WDDM 1.0 started with Vista, not XP
XP uses XPDM/XDDM drivers while Vista & above use WDDM drivers

Now that you remind me, that's correct. Win 7 could use the XP drivers.

I suppose that the bolding and the exclamation point were necessary, but...

You might want to check whether you really need to have that 4650 usable or not.

At User benchmark, there are 2 versions for the 4650, dekstop and mobile. Similarly, there are 3 versions of the Intel 630 onboard - HD 630, (Kaby Lake processors), UHD 630 (Coffee Lake i5 + i7) and UHD 630 (Coffee Lake i3). Of the three, the last one is the least powerful - but when compared with a Radeon 4650 (non mobility) card, it is still more powerful than either of the 4650s.

Here is the link to prove it: UserBenchmark: ATI Radeon HD 4650 vs Intel UHD Graphics 630 (Desktop Coffee Lake i3)

To add to the comparisons, the 4650 GPUs were produced ~ 2014, whereas the Intel 630 (Kaby Lake) is from 2016, and the UHD 630s are from 2017.

Search for 'Intel 630' to change to any of those three mentioned, and you can also search for '4650' on the right to select the mobile GPU, if you really need to (although there is really no difference between hte dekstop and mobile versions, the desktop barely edges the mobile 4650 by a mere few percentage points, making the difference negligible).

SO, you're not getting any added benefit from attempting to use the 4650, except perhaps multiple monitors, if you need that.

However, if you actually do need that 4650 working, check out this thread: Radeon HD 4650 Working under Windows 10 1909 x64

If it worked in Windows 10, other than the WDDM support, technically it might work in Windows 11, though YMMV as the post is for Windows 10 specifically:

Hello.

Here is something interesting. I installed windows 10 on another drive after shrinking volume. The same issue persists now across both 10 & 11 - Windows. What is strange is - When i had standalone windows 10, I was able to install the stock AMD 13.1 Catalyst software with display drivers and it showed - ATI Radeon HD 4650 in device manager. Now in both the OS's despite repeated attempts to install the stock AMD catalyst package, the display adapter only shows ATI Radeon HD 4600 series.

Another one aspect - In Windows 10 , the Device has stopped - code 43.

I believe Microsoft is releasing driver updates through windows update that makes the legacy cards obsolete. This could be deliberate as to force consumers to purchase new ones. Just like Windows 11 not being supported to processors earlier than 8th generation. But i have installed windows 11 even on my older Core i3 2nd generation and it works just fine.

I had a friend who ran into a display driver issue when he installed 11 on a system. On a hunch, I had him restore his Win 10 backup. We then backed up his drivers using PNPUTIL, reinstalled Win 11, restored the drivers with PNPUTIL. Oddly, that worked.

WDDM = Windows Display Driver Model

Every once in a whilewith a major new version of Windows, Microsoft will put out a whole new Driver Model :-). In other words, they change the technical requirements and design of drivers for certain classes (types) of devices. There are some very good reasons for doing this, but it means that often drivers of the older kind designed specifically for older versions of Windows, won't work on new versions of Windows that require a different kind of driver.

The latest update is I Have removed Windows 10 entirely and only running Windows 11.
13.4 beta AMD drivers is the last package from AMD website I installed. Setup successful with display driver installed. still no display when I removed my HDMI cable(Intel 630) connected to my BenQ 24 and plugged in the HDMI of 4650.

I'm running nuts cause it once worked on Windows 10 well.
