That's sweet turntable. It's a little out of my price range.

I don't have much vinyl, so I purchased a cheap audio-technica turntable:

I did upgrade the cartridge to a better one. The turntable has Bluetooth and USB connectivity, which is really why I got it. It suits my purposes for the moment.

I said "might get it". Honestly, I don't need it as I'm sure my older Denon is still fine, I just need a new cartridge. And I can't see dropping 2.5K on something I'm probably not going to use much since I'm not into vinyl like I used to despite me still having a collection. Honesty, if I was going to get it, I would have done it by now.

The good thing is that I enjoy my turntable. I don't know what a better one sounds like, so there's really no urge to upgrade.

I'm currently listening to my wife's Soundgarden album - "Fourth of July" track. We usually listen to it on her Bose surround sound system, but I'm breaking in my headphones.

I actually have an older Denon turntable I bought in 1993. I paid $347 new. It's still in great condition and has been boxed away for 10+ years. This isn't my photo, but it's the turntable I have. I just need to get a cartridge for it. Denon DP-47F....

I like the repeat and locate options on that turntable. Those are two things I'd like to have on my turntable, but I didn't think about it when looking for turntables. I was looking something that would interface with my computer via USB.

I have the Bose Soundtouch 300 (first gen) soundbar & Sub. Unfortunately, the soundbar has acting up, often losing sound from the TV, thus I've not used it for months. In fact, I've never really been able to enjoy my new TV I bought back in Feb, because I can't use the soundbar, so I'm about to trade it in for the Bose Smart Ultra Soundbar. Bose is offering $150 trade up.

That's a pretty good trade up! My wife has that sound bar in her office paired with the 700-series sub and 700-series satellite speakers. It's an immersive experience. I have the Bose Soundbar 600 in my office because it fits under my main monitor. I also have the same sub but the older satellite speakers (I got cheap on those!).

That's a shame that it only lasted 7 years. My wife has a Bose home stereo system that's going on, well, it must be 20 years old. It still sounds phenomenal.

I was looking at Sonos speakers. They seem to have a good sound range. Of course, it's more out of pocket than the $150 trade-up deal. But change is sometimes good. How do reports say the Sonos or Samsung compare to Bose or other systems?

The Sonos Arc & sub would end up costing me $400 more than the Bose Smart Ultra and Sub going the trade in route.

That said, given my experience with Bose and hearing the Sonos in a demo session, the Sonos system sounds better when you add the satellite speakers, but you're now going over 2K for the setup. Also, if you like bass, the Sonos is the way to go.

If I were looking for a music setup, this would be the way to go. But for just TV, and occasional music, I'd go Bose since the soundbar does exceptionally well making vocals heard.

At the end of the day the Bose soundbar & sub would be the better (and cheaper) move for my needs.

Thoughts on using Spatial sound for headphones? I've tried it, but I cannot discern a difference between turning it on and leaving it off. Sound wise, which do you think is best?

Spatial sound basically widens the soundstage. It's not going to be a massive difference but it's there. Best used with headphones.

As for whether to use or not is a personal choice, and also what you listen to. I myself don't use it because with my headphone the stage is wide enough. Also, too wide a stage and things sound distant and faint.

The best way to find out is try it on different sources - you might love it on jazz, hate it on rock, think it a waste, but at least you know. Sound is a very subjective and personal thing that's particular to you :-)

I tried it with Tool, a Prog Rock band, and there was negligible, if any difference. I'll try it with classical guitar music another day. Maybe I'll wait until the burn in period of the headphones.

Interesting. I enabled Spatial sound. When I changed the format to 32bit from 16bit, it disabled Spatial sound. Would anyone know why this would occur?

I believe (not sure, haven't tested) that feature is limited to 16-bit. But it may also depend on the capabilities of the DAC. Zero wrong with 16-bit audio. In fact, 16-Bit / 44.1 is the default Redbook standard for audio CD sound quality.

Anyway, this is one of those deep dive debates pitting 16-bit against 24-bit sound in which provides better sound. I have both 24-bit and 16-bit files, and you'd be hard pressed to tell the difference. Also dependent on how revealing (ability to pick up micro details) your system is.

Some feel 24-bit sound produces less noise and better detail in recordings, but again.... hard to tell.

I've just started trying out Audirvana Studio from yesterday.

My audio setup:
  1. Yamaha Aventage RX-A780 AV Receiver.
  2. Yamaha bookshelf speakers. and surround speakers (Boston)
  3. Yamaha subwoofer.
  4. Sennheiser HD600 headphones.
  5. Headphone amp/DAC is a Fiio K5Pro which handles DSD.
  6. Sony Bluray player that is SACD capable.

I will report back in a couple of days when I get a chance to compare Audirvana with JRiver. Fwiw, I listen exclusively to classical music. My initial listen to Audirvana revealed that it may be a good piece of software.
