I have been backing up my files using the included Backup and Restore as an addition to AOMEI Backupper. Yesterday, I got an error and it's 0x80070015. I don't know why it suddenly won't do a backup and don't understand what I need to do about this error code. Retries don't help. Thanks.

Just like the backup and Restore Windows 7 feature that was in Windows 10, the backup function in windows 11 works until it doesn't. Personally,I would never rely on it. To make it even worse, the errors it throws out are generic errors that do not give give much information.
That particular error can indicate a file is locked or in use and cannot be backed up. If you haven't already, Restart and try backup again.

Here a a few things you can try in no particular order.
1. Make sure that Windows update is current.

2. Open Reliability History. There should be a failure yesterday of the backup and restore app. Expand the failure to see if it gives more information.

3. Open a command prompt as administrator and type sfc /scannow
Pay attention to the scan results to see if SFC found anything it could not repair. If it found corruption it could not fix followup with this command (note the spaces)
dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth
Restart computer

4. Ensure the destination drive has enough space for a backup. Check that drive for errors.

5. Make sure that the necessary Windows Backup services are running. To check this, open the Services application by typing “services.msc” in the Run dialog (Win + R) and look for services like “Block Level Backup Engine Service” and “Windows Backup.” Ensure that these services are set to “Automatic” and are running. The Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) is essential for creating system image backups. Ensure that the VSS service is running and set to automatic:

In running the scan, it did find and fix a corrupt file. When I plugged in my external drive, I was immediately told it had a problem. I then told it to fix the problem and everything seemed to be OK. When I tried running a backup, it gave me the same error code again. I ran the scan now again and it says it did not find any problems. Since it says it did not find any problems, should I run the clean image anyway? My skills are lacking. Thanks.

Do you mean the repair install? Yes, you can OR since you say you have Aoemi images, you can restore an image made before your problem with Backup and Restore started. If it were me and my Windows was working well except for this one app, I would shuck Backup and Restore and find another backup solution to fit my needs.

Please tell me, exactly how do you use this app between your Aoemi images? Exactly what do you backup? Do you also have Onedrive folder backup syncing turned on? If so all your documents and pictures are being backed up to Onedrive anyway.

It was One Drive that started all of my problems with Windows 11. In any event, when I took my machine to a shop to get out of the One Drive problem, the guy suggested that I do one backup using the standard Control Panel backup and another using the AOMEI Backupper just to be on the safe side, using two different external hard drives.

OK, just wondering.
Before doing a repair install check the drive you are backing up to. In file explorer, right click on the drive, select properties,
click tools tab. Under error checking , click CHECK. Even it it tells you the drive doesn't need scanning, click "scan drive"

Try the repair install. It will repair windows files without you losing any personal files or apps. A repair install repairs windows files only. If something in your personal account is causing this issue, a repair install WILL NOT fix it. Repair Install Windows 11 with an In-place Upgrade Tutorial
Please report back your findings.

Thanks for the error checking tip. It came back almost immediately and said it repaired the drive, but without an explanation. Better than a sharp stick in the eye, I guess. I'm glad you said I should scan drive anyway as it first came back saying it was unnecessary. It fixed something while telling me not to bother. Who writes this "stuff"?!!
Despite the fact that the built- in program has worked until now, I'll give it up and try Macrium instead.
I keep getting a message that says I should hook up my drive and save my File History. Should I do that or tell it to ignore it?
When I use the Backupper, I tell it to go to my C-Drive, all users and pick my name. It then backs up what is under my name. I do not picks specific folders in there. Is that the right way to do it? If I use a different back up program, how should I tell it to do the backup? I definitely want pictures, documents and videos.
Thanks for the help.

First let me say you were advised incorrectly. You can not do file/folder backups with Macrium Free, only full disk or partition images. It requires a paid license for file/folder backups.

That said, one thing I am a stickler for is my backup plan and my imaging app of choice but I also simplify my life. In my case I religiously do full images once every month or as needed and use paid Macrium to do it. If I was concerned about individual files/folders between my regular images, I would either use the cloud (but I don't do Onedrive) OR use an app made specifically for that purpose. One such app is FreeFileSync which is free. This app can be run on a manual basis or set to fun in real-time ( automatically keeps a mirror of whatever folder(s) you choose to whatever drive you choose to backup to). Of course for realtime to work your backup drive has to be connected at all times.

That solution is more to my liking. I know this forum is full of people who are deep into computer “ stuff”, but many of us aren’t and appreciate a simple way of doing things. I was about to download Macrium, but decided I had better look for more information. YouTube has videos that aren’t necessarily easy to follow. Again, simple is better. Thanks.

I guess I'm a little too ignorant of how the FreeFileSynch works. I can get things set up on the files I want to backup on the C- Drive, but don't know how to handle the external/ D- Drive. I can't leave it blank and just putting a D: isn't enough. What do I need to put in that "target drive" to get it to work? Do I just call it D:/Pictures, etc. for each folder I want to save?

1. Build a folder(s) on D that you want to sync to. It can be any name you want or you can use the same folder name on D that you have in the left pane.
ie:Pictures. IMO that's the most logical way to keep things straight

2.I believe in your case you want to mirror what is in the folder on the left to the folder on the right. Select the gear icon and choose 'mirror'
(You'll notice the button in upper right corner changes to 'mirror'.)

3. In left pane click browse and select folder to want to sync (back up) from

4. In right pane click browse and select folder you want to sync (back up) to;

5.Click Synchronize. That's it.

I suggest until you see how it works to play around with it and use a small test folder, adding, removing, and changing a file in that folder.
FreeFileSync manual FreeFileSync
RealTimeSync manual FreeFileSync

The only time I ever use this app is to manually mirror a couple of flash drives and it works great and is fast. I'm not familiar with using realtime sync. I'm sure @antspants won't mind telling you how if you chose to go that way.

    …still on a horse.
I guess before I try anything else, I have to explain my new problem. I clicked on my D-drive on the left side of File Manager. I clicked the + sign at the upper left and chose New Folder so I could add the suggested folders to the D-drive so there is a destination for my files to go to. After I clicked the new folder, I expected to be shown a new folder and then be able to name it. Nothing happened. I didn't know what else to do at the time, so I wanted to exit File Manager and eventually, was told the drive was not responding. I then used the Properties, Tools, and scanned the drive. I then told it to fix anything it found, even though it told me there was nothing wrong, and it said it fixed whatever was wrong. I then tried the same procedure of tying to add a folder to the D-drive and it was the same thing. File Manager shows 2 files on the drive that must have been there when I first used it in March. Supposedly, it has backups I've done using the Windows included software, as stated as my original problem, but nothing shows to that effect. Right now, this computer is telling me the drive suddenly doesn't work. Now, I guess I really need help!
I should mention that I have an external DVD reader/ writer. When I've used it in the past, it came up as being the D-drive. I was surprised that this little external drive also came up as the D-drive.
I'm lost and don't have enough knowledge to get through this without step-by-step help. Thanks.

First create a new folder elsewhere (not on D) does the 'new folder' function work as you expect it to? If yes, but you can't create a folder on D: even when using file explorer, this accounts for why Backup and Restore is not working for you. Each of the multiple times you scan this drive it shows it doesn't need scanning, but when you scan anyway, it says it fixes something. DO I have this right???

If all that is true IMO something is wrong with the D: drive. What kind of drive is D? Internal, external. HDD, SSD, flash drive, etc? Try another drive and I'll bet your Backup and Restore function will work.

What happens when you open D: right click inside D: from context menu select NEW>select folder. Does that create a folder on D:?

I think the drive is probably defective but you can attempt to reformat D: drive to see if it makes a difference. This will erase anything on it. Right click on D drive in file explorer, select format. Choose ntfs under file system.

As for as what drive letter windows assigns to a usb device, it will always be the next available drive letter unless you have assigned a specific drive letter to the device.

If I add a new folder on the C-Drive, it works as I expect it to.
Yes, each time I scan the external drive, it tells me there is nothing wrong with it.
If I try to make a new folder on the D-Drive, no matter how I try to do it, it does nothing - a blue spinning circle shows up. Even though it shows me what’s on the D - Drive, it says:” The destination you have specified does not exist. It might be an offline network location or an empty CD or DVD drive. Check the location and try again.” I hit cancel and have to exit File Explorer.
I reformatted the drive. The file system was set for exFAT. I changed it to ntfs, which is supposed to be the default
After formatting, I added folders for Documents, Pictures and Videos. It worked as expected.
I will now go through the tutorial video and see what happens.
The drive I’m trying to use is a solid state external hard drive with 2T of memory.
OBTW, is the mirror function only for the first time? I will be backing up the same folders on a weekly basis. Wouldn’t I only have to add the new files for each backup after this? If I use Mirror, will it back up the entire thing each time or just the new stuff added?
Thanks!

No, you use the mirror function every time. Only the adds, updates, and deletes on the left will happen on the right. It takes no action to files that have had no changes.

If you set it up properly (using FreeFileSync with RealTimeSync) everything you change/add/delete can be recognised in Real Time and the mirror action will sync it with your destination folders you set in the job.

E.X.
You have setup FreeFileSync to create a job for Folder A
Folder A and it’s files (less the ones you can actually exclude) will be mirrored to Folder A in your backup destination.

If you have a document in folder A and change the document, when you save that document, RealTimeSync (which monitors the FreeFileSync job you created) will automatically update the file in the destination folder in real time or at an interval that you like.
Anything you add/delete/change etc will be mirrored to the destination folder.
You can also just do it manually if you prefer, you just need to double click on the FreeFileSync job.
To have it monitored in real time, you need to create a RealTimeSync job which monitors the FreeFileSync jobs.

You can create as many FreeFileSync jobs as you like then save them as a FreeFileSync Batch file.
Double clicking on this Batch file will start the mirror process in all of the FreeFileSync jobs in the batch.
Or, again, you can create a RealTimeSync job to monitor the FreeFileSync Batch jobs for you in real time

There are obviously other types of jobs you can create like Two Way Syncing.
The RealTimeSync that I mention, is included in the FreeFileSync install.

I do plan on making this easier for you. It sounds confusing but once shown, it’s really quite easy.

I can:
A. Make a tutorial with screenshots (however the videos in the tutorial section I linked are fine) or
B. I can connect with you using Microsoft Assist or some other program. You can create some dummy folders that we can work with to teach you.

Reading hundreds of complaints about backups that have gone terribly wrong, I'm reminded of my own (Professional) rules of doing backups.
Rule one is, "Never do a backup from within Windows, but always do it in DOS with Windows Closed."
So my own backup program, "Ghost" is always run from a DOS Bootable Flash Drive. (with every file on the HD CLOSED)

I never have any backup problems, as long as there are NO Errors on the HD. Any respectable Backup program, even Ghost, won't back up errors. And, I've been using Ghost since 1997. It just works, on ANY and every version of Windows, Unix, Server, etc.

Cheers Mates!
