Yes, but, nuke the originals too!?!?!? Makes no sense!!! It's as if they're claiming full ownership of your property!!!
What if I was a noob who had 6TB of space and Backed up all 6TB of my stuff, then made that stupid mistake? I'd be f*cked!
In Proton Drive, if I choose not to sync/backup certain folders, it doesn't nuke my original files! 🤷‍♂️

I think the point is - there shouldn't need to be a fix! It should be straightforward.

I didn't know that. But then I usually uninstall One Drive at first set up, before adding my files.

I also think there is a difference between criticising One Drive and criticising Microsoft. I have not criticised Microsoft per se - just One Drive! The rest of Windows 11 I like (mostly).

If they improve One Drive, and make it more user-friendly and "reliable" I might use it. But for now I have

1) idrive backups daily
2) external hard drive images
3) Googledrive for sharing documents if needed.

To a layperson Backup means, make copies of my stuff in another location,
Stop Backup should mean, stop making copies of my stuff. Period.
That should be blatantly obvious from the get-go!

There never did need to be a "fix". Nothing was broken. OneDrive was working exactly the way it should. This was simply a case of not understanding how OneDrive actually works.

The problem is with Microsoft's implementation of backup and OneDrive. You're right, @Edwin! They screwed it up. Watch Leo's video in my post #74.

Let me make it totally clear.

Learn how to use onedrive properly and it is great.

Don't learn how to use it properly, and it can be a nightmare.

The problem is people just do not want to put the effort in to learn, and justify.that by blaming onedrive or MS.

The old phrase "A bad workman blames their tool“ is so true for onedrive.

So, either learn how to use it properly, or uninstall it but if you do not want to learn, look in a mirror and be honest with yourself!

Wait, I thought one drive only backs up your files and does not delete files from local drives? We use one drive at work and it only synchs files between laptop and one drive like duplicate files. I just received a laptop upgrade in the office last week. I didn't have to transfer my files. As soon as I logged in to One drive, it copied (synched) all my one drive files to my local drive.

One drive is reliable. I've used it for 7 years + and it hasn't lost a single file of mine.

We have over 15,000 people at work who use OneDrive.

It's very reliable.

Understood. But as mentioned in Glasskuter's post earlier. A new owner's files are automatically uploaded by One Drive, which they might not realise or even want that. Any there are many people out there who just want to buy a computer and use it, probably never do backups and don't want to understand the technicalities of installed software. I know many who never even open settings.

So is the default set up for One Drive set up that files wouldn't disappear from the computer if they delete them in One Drive? ie - would you actively have to change the settings for the issues to occur? It doesn't sound like it, based on Edwin's post.

I'd like to know the best set up myself, so the teenager doesn't lose all his college work. As I doubt he'll take my advice to uninstall it!

@Hazel123, having used OneDrive for the past 15 years, here's the best advice I can give. If you and your son are not willing to expend the effort to learn how OneDrive works and how to use it, you are best off just uninstalling it.

Somebody who tries to drive car without lessons will be positively dangerous - it is not the car that is unsafe but the person!
