Being asked to enter network credentials but dialog box has nowhere to enter them

This is new. I just ran a Windows update and since the post-update-reboot it won't let me connect to the USB drive attached to my router. Windows 11 complains that the username and password that are saved are wrong. They're not. But even if they were, I'm not given the option to enter them again. As you can see below, the dialog box that appears tells me they're wrong and offers only one button - the cancel button. If I right-click on the shortcut I have to the router, there's no credentials option. I know it's not the router or the USB drive, I can still access the drive from my phone.

It's like knocking on the door to somewhere and them saying "you can't come in without knowing the password" and then slamming the door in your face and not giving you the chance to tell them you know what it is.

This update has basically screwed me. Without access to that drive this PC is now useless to me.

The updates that were installed today are:

2024-04 Cumulative Update for Windows 11 Version 23H2 for x64-based Systems (KB5036893)

2024-04 Cumulative Update for .NET Framework 3.5 and 4.8.1 for Windows 11, version 23H2 for x64 (KB5036620)

Are you sure it's not asking you to sign in to the Router itself? The IP address...192.168.13.1 seems to be the Router?

If you click on Cancel then double-click on the shared computer again, aren't you re-prompted for credentials?

I have never seen a network computer referred to by its IP address rather than a ComputerName & I do not know the significance of that difference.

I'd like to see a screenshot that includes the credentials prompt.

Sometimes get similar issues when updating Canary version of Windows. Not being able to input the Router's log in. I just disconnect the drive and set it up again. This is a USB drive connected to a BT (Plusnet) router.

Yes and no. It *is* the router, but instead of asking me to sign in to it, it's just telling me that I've got the wrong credentials to sign in to it. Even though the stored credentials are correct, they've been correct for the last 2 years. A Windows update and a reboot shouldn't have made them become incorrect.

I'm never prompted for credentials, that's why I posted this question. There's no difference in using IP address or server name. For example, if the IP address of elevenforum was 1.2.3.4 then you could have such an address: https://1.2.3.4/t/some-question. The screenshot that includes the credentials prompt can't exist, it never asks me for credentials, hence this post.

Yeah, I tried a disconnect and reconnect but the reconnect won't work. If I type in the IP address or share name of the router, it gives the error below. If I browse the network instead and select the router, it gives the credentials error again.



I'm gonna go look for the credentials manager (which I think is a thing) and see if I can delete the stored credentials. Maybe that will force Windows to ask me for credentials (which it should already be doing if it thinks they're wrong).

Solved !!

I went to the Credentials Manager and deleted the stored credentials (which were good).
I then tried again to connect to the 192.168.13.1 router and was told I needed to enter credentials (which is different to them being incorrect) but it still didn't offer me the standard UI dialog to enter them.

So it is still a broken interface.

But, I then went back to the Credentials Manager and entered them again, the same as they were before.
Tried to connect to the router and this time it worked. Because this bypassed the broken UI it works.

So, the solution to Windows 23H2 with the updates as I have them in the original post, is to delete the credentials and then re-add them. Regardless of how pointless this seems if you're entering them back in exactly the same.

It's possible I guess that the WU corrupted the credentials.
