My experience is that what the user wants or needs is often diametrically opposed to what the company is prepared to let them have. This seems to be worse, the bigger the company. The bigger the company, the more the IT departments try to standardise on devices (always in the name of security).

If you are in a company that gives you the device you want,,then you are lucky!

Things is, we don't even know what business he is into. :) Design business? Photography? Tax services? Different tasks require different specs.

Folks, I have already done 90% my workhorse replacement planning and the remaining 10% is better done in 2 or 3 years time, just before buying the replacement.

The purpose of this thread is to gain broad perspectives, consistent with what I wrote in my OP (I added the highlight in the quote below)

For a typical small business office setting and usage, full size tower for expandability, otherwise anything goes.

Hence, sharing planning details, exact usage, etc. would be counter-productive, as it would narrow down the perspectives.

I will mark this thread 'Solved' as it did produce plenty of broad perspectives, thanks!

One thing with businesses and the equipment they need is with proprietary programs such as used by medical facilities, manufacturing plants, animal clinics, accountants, realtors, etc., keeping up with newer OSes can be daunting in terms of technology and economics and some stay with older software due to the costs and some because of programmers not being able to update as fast.

Windows 10 Home insists on a Microsoft account if you connect to the internet when setting it up. If you don't connect it will let you set up a local account. It is still possible to set up Windows 11 Home with just a local account, but it takes a lot more fiddling to bypass connecting to the internet.

The Pro version of both 10 and 11 do offer (in small print at the bottom left of the setup screen) the option to set up an 'offline account' (a local account).

The only account I have is 2 gmail accounts. Can I use one of them? If so, I'd be so happy.

You would have to use one to setup an MS account. You can do the workaround or install Win 10 then upgrade to Win 11.

You mean it would be an MS account under a fictitious name? Same as setting up a Microsoft account?

A Microsoft Account is not the same thing as an email account. The MS account is more like registering with a website such as this forum. You register with MS and the account provides you with a place to keep all your records of your devices, MS Office keys, etc., plus access to OneDrive cloud storage. Microsoft require that you provide an email address when registering but that can be any email provider, such as gmail or Yahoo. It doesn't have to be a Microsoft email address.

So yes, you can use a gmail account. But you still have to register for a Microsoft Account to use it. I thought you were trying to avoid that and set up Windows with just a local account. That is still possible in W11 Home, just a bit more difficult than it was in W10 home.

If installing a Windows 11 Home edition and you currently do not have an Internet connection available, press the Shift + F10 keys to open a command prompt. Copy and paste the taskkill /F /IM oobenetworkconnectionflow.exe command into the command prompt, and press Enter. Close the command prompt, and continue at step 21D to set up a local account.

YES, That is what I wanted to do is avoid having to set up a Microsoft account.
I just wanted to be able to boot up the new desktop when I plug it in to start using it like I have been doing on all my previous new computers.
I tried to understand what I have been reading to prepare myself but, so confused.

It's not that difficult to understand, really. MS want to discourage you from using a local account in Home, so they make it almost impossible to find the local account setup option. The trick is that you need to disconnect from the internet - no internet means it's impossible to connect to a Microsoft account.

Now for Windows 10 Home you just had to be careful not to connect when asked. But for Windows 11 Home MS have hidden that option too. So when it wants you to connect, you just bring up a command prompt and type one command that will stop it insisting that you connect. I gave the way to do that, and a link to the full tutorial that I copied those instructions from, in post #51.

Even if someone does want to use their MS account, they should wait until after the install. MS still uses the first five characters of the email address as the username if they sign-in while doing the install.

Going against MS (be it MS account or MS this or MS that) will guaranteed cause all kinds of inconveniences in the long run.

There are of course a few MS things that annoy me too, but I am careful not to make changes that will annoy me even more later on :eek:

Edit: MS is just like the other tech giants, they all do their little (or big) things, just don't go against their biz, you just do your own little things that don't get you trampled in the stampede, my 2 cents.

Well its not really going against MS. They are perfectly happy to upgrade your W10 Home with its local account to a W11 Home and local account, with hardly a mention of 'wouldn't you really prefer a Microsoft account?'.

But MS is hiding these things in W11 (at least as a fresh installation) that means MS doesn't want you to tamper with it,

FWIW, I do only easy customizations with the device, then I do easy personalizations with my own person LOL

I appreciate all your comments here in trying to help me. "Thumbs up" to all.

I ordered windows 10 Pro, in hopes I do not have to sign up to an MSN account, thus stopping me from continuing the set up if I don't.
I do not want an MSN account because of privacy issues I have read about.
I do have a laptop with windows 10 when first came out and never did sign up to MSN. Yes, there are features not being able to use unless I do but, I do not miss them at all as long as I can do what I have been doing with the laptop.
My MAIN computer for privacy is my windows 7 desktop that I am reluctantly replacing with windows 10, hoping I can learn to get used to that format. For one thing, I live on MSWord program and dislike what Windows 10 uses. I dislike having to save as Rich Text Doc which does NOT play well with me. I dislike what they have, called "Word Pad" format.

Yes, 11 Pro still lets you set up with a local account, but It's not made obvious how to do so. If you get to the screen asking for your MS account you should click on 'sign in options' to find your way to the local account option. For setting up Pro the simplest method it not to be connected to the internet while setting it up. Then you'll be nagged to connect, but have an option (missing in Home) to 'continue with limited setup', which will then take you to setting up a local account.

Maybe you can live with the web version of MS Word that does not require installation. I dislike installations too, in part because it contributes to the spying (claimed by any software vendor to ensure correct operation)

Most of the installations and corresponding spying has already been done via the OS itself, though.

Edit: I myself am not paranoid enough, I guess, I do subscribe to and install MS 365.
