protonmail is the most popular privacy concerned email provider, I use it since it started when getting their email was almost impossible and people had to wait in line.

It started only a few years ago, but the biggest benefit is that no outside governments can simply demand user data unlike in most privacy hostile countries like those in which most of us live.

protonmail is also the only free email provider in Switzerland I know of and to my knowledge it's open source.

i've used gmail for years. no concerns on my end. Very reliable and available on my phone and computers.

Does Proton Mail support OAuth2 authorisation protocol? I think it needs to in order to access Gmails. I currently use Thunderbird, which supports OAuth2.

No OAuth2 and no IMAP in free version? That's definitely put me off Proton Mail but thanks for mentioning it.

I have five accounts at GMail, but that's on the web, not on my computer, so to get the mail down to my own computer, I use the FREE version of O.E.Classic, a close look-alike to the old "Outlook Express" that so many of us used, back in the day.

And, just out of curiosity, I did sign up for a ProtonMail account. Free, of course. It works, but again, it's on the web, not on my computer, so I have to manually go there, log in and wait to get my mail. Secure, but not so convenient.
So if security is your big thing, take a look. Cant' hurt!

I think web mail is more secure because nothing gets downloaded to your hard drive.

If you believe some mail X is malicious you can open it in virtual browser session, but you can't do this in mail client because it would immediatelly run in your memory.

I prefer to not have my email on my local computer. Couple of reasons
  1. Nothing to backup when reinstalling or getting a new computer
  2. Always available, regardless if I am at home, at work or on my phone.

Of course you have the big providers , Gmail, Yahoo , Microsoft and even older providers like AOL are still around . It is
really a matter of choice . I even have an old netscape address which still works . I know all of these support OA2 authentication . I have accounts on a few of these and I access all of these at once using the Thunderbird email client which highly customizable . It works well and then you have email on your desktop if that is your goal . Of course if you want to login to these webwise that is still an option .

I am still using Earthlink as my IMAP email provider, have for many years. They do charge $8.95 per month. What I mostly like is that they screen out the vast majority of spam for me. My email client on my desktop is eM Client.
