Bitlocker Drive Encryption

Hi

I have been using bitlocker on my portable Seagate expansion drive for years, and Windows 10 has always shown the drive correctly, showing the drive name with the customised Seagate icon. I recently upgraded to Windows 11, but now file explorer shows the drive with the generic drive icon, and the drive does not have the correct name, only shown as local drive. The drive does work, but right clicking on the drive, no bitlock options are shown. If I do a chkdsk /f on the drive, then file explorer shows the drive like in Windows 10, but on a reboot, it's shown as generic again. Odd thing is you open Defrag, the drive shows the correct name and custom icon, so the issue is the new file explorer.

If I remove bitlocker, then the drive also shows as it should with custom icon and name, but removing bitlocker is far from ideal

Any ideas?

Did chkdsk /f report any errors?

You can go back and check the chkdsk log in Event Viewer:

To customise a disk icon, you would normally use autoruns.inf
The autoruns.inf is a hidden file that is optionally stored on the removable drive. This file can contain the lines

As far as I understand, Bitlocker has predefined icons to show Locked or Unlocked drive.

These are all different to the generic drive icon. Same in W10 and W11. So you'd expect no change in either W10 and W11, when you change the autoruns.inf file.

To change the Bitlocker icon has proven to be extremely challenging. I could only find one person who has claimed to have done this via the registry. See Post #32 Change Drive Icon over on Ten Forums.

I have the autoruns file and as I said its worked fine in Windows 10 and previous versions of windows, chkdsk shows no errors, but what chkdsk does it basically reloads the drive once scanned, and then File Explorer shows the correct details. If you do a normal reboot its not reading the drive correctly. If I remove bitlocker it works as expected, so there is something not 100% with the new version of File Explorer and the bitlocker extension that should load when opening File Explorer. I have replicated this Issue now on numerous computers.

Interesting :). You could always restore the 'Classic' File Explorer and see if that makes a difference.
