Solved BitLocker Enabled?

I recently got a laptop with Win11 Home pre-installed. I fired it up and bypassed the Microsoft account as I always do on a new install. I was busy doing some other updates and I noticed a utility that mention BitLocker enabled. Note that I have never used BitLocker, and have no intention of starting. With all the discussion of BitLocker being on by default, I decided to check.

I opened a command prompt and ran manage-bde -status to see what it shows. To my dismay, it appears that it's indeed enabled, but protection is off, whatever that means! Of course, no BitLocker recovery key was provided with the pre-installed Windows, and I sure don't have one. I went to turn BitLocker off in Settings, and of course it wants the recovery key, something I don't have.

I'm assuming there is no recovery for this, and I sure don't want to leave it enabled and keep running. I'm sure at some point I'd have need for the recovery key (which I don't have)!

I'm considering just installing Win11 Pro and leaving all this behind, any reason I shouldn't do that?

If you're actually logged into the system, you can just turn off Bitlocker with manage-bde or via Powershell

If you set up a Microsoft account during Windows Setup, then it'll automatically enable BitLocker or Device Encryption.

Usually, the BitLocker recovery key is automatically saved to the Microsoft account.

When I attempt to turn off BitLocker, I get asked for my recovery key. I don't have a recovery key, so that's a little problem. :unsure:

It's odd it's stating no key protectors. May want to see if there is in fact a key assuming you do have a MS account. If not you may need to do a clean install.

One thing, this is Win11 Home, so I didn't think BitLocker even applied. I'm going to put Win11 Pro on it, but I didn't want to lose all the customization I've already done, so I was going to do an update. Clearly, I didn't want to do that with an unknown state.

Turning it off and decrypting the drives in PowerShell worked great, and they didn't ask for any recovery key. I also checked status and now it's fully decrypted and BitLocker is off.

I still don't know why it was on in the first place! :unsure:

If an MS account was ever used (at setup or later) device encryption gets enabled which is like bitlocker lite.

Well, that I can't say. This was a new computer that was first fired up by me. I just went through the initial setup of picking locations, etc. and at the appropriate time I bopped out and disabled logging into a Microsoft account and created my local Admin account. That's what I used for the rest of the setup. It's never been connected to a Microsoft Account.

Since this was configured by the maker, I'm assuming it was encrypted right from the start, why I have no idea.

On a clean install, 24H2 defaults to enabling Device Encryption if your UEFI is marked by the PC vendor as supporting the latest HW security features. Prior to 24H2, it would not have defaulted to enabled.

Your PC vendor did not try to turn off this feature, so your Windows looks like that.

If you used Rufus, there's a customization option to disable Device Encryption on a clean install.

The machine is currently at 23H2, it hasn't been "offered" 24H2 yet.

Check your BIOS' advanced settings, see if there's a Device Encryption setting which signals its preference to the OS.

Since automatic device encryption only happens if you install with an MS account couldn't you simply start off by installing with a local account to bypass encryption?

I ALWAYS install with a local account so I'm guessing that is why I never see auto device encryption even though I do absolutely nothing to actively prevent it.

I have no idea what they did before I got it, but I didn't use an MS Account at all, I bypass then for any install.
