all the examples on how this protects you talks about if somebody gets their hands on your device. but lets say i catch a nasty virus, and somebody is able to remotely snoop through my machine or tries to transfer files, will they only see encrypted files? basically wondering if bitlocker protects data from viruses or just from somebody else physically having the device.

The Encrypting File System (EFS) on Microsoft Windows is a feature introduced on NTFS that provides filesystem-level encryption.

BitLocker is a logical volume encryption system in order to prevent most offline physical attacks.

When you boot your machine, the key is supplied and the drive is decrypted for use. Therefore, if the OS is running and somebody is able to gain control and snoop through your files, everything they are going to see is unencrypted.

Basically, if you lose your laptop, and they are able to guess your password to logon, they are going to have all of your data. If they cannot guess your password and they pull out your hard drive and stick it into another machine to get to your data, it's going to be encrypted with bitlocker.
