Can anyone recommend a BluRay External Disk Reader USB3/C? I don't need a Writer, but no one seems to offer just a Player. Reliability is my most important factor.

I don't own one, but:

Its USB connector is Type A, so you'd need an adapter (cheap) to use it with a USB-C port.

I presume you're looking for a drive that is powered by the USB port.

My own external drive is an LG desktop internal in OWC Mercury Pro external case. Uses a wall wart for power. Bulky and heavy, but with faster read speeds than a USB powered drive.

You would be looking for what they usually call a Blu-ray combo drive, only marginally less costly than a writer.

e.g. ASUS SBC-06D2X-U

I don't need a Writer, but it doesn't seem that they make any without Write capability. As has been said, there wouldn't be much of a savings anyway...so I'm OK with a writer. What is important, is that it can read Blu-Ray video without errors.

Should I just get a standalone, and us the HDMI input?

Do you wish to view things on your laptop? I'd expect it to have an HDMI output (only).

I have a "black box" that was made to record gaming sessions. It works for viewing (and recording) any HDMI AV.

So why do you need anything, surely a "black box" of that kind would also playback Blu-ray video.

You won't find a USB Bluray reader only any more, only on the second hand market possibly, or in a stand alone Blu-ray player "black box".
The market for Optical drives is dwindling.

The box is only an interface between a Source component and in this case, a Computer.
