Lucky i was able to do it because I literally have had it restart suddenly while in Bios many times. It was usb booted

Computer keeps turning back on

Hi What in the BIOS makes a computer keep turning back on after being shut down? It does it with and without any drive connected. That’s why I’m trying to figure out what in BIOS could control this

It could be a faulty power switch. They have very tiny contacts. They're fairly easy to break by accident.

Yeah swap testing will do. But do you the best program to just check a psu? If it exists. Causr ill swap it and run that

HWInfo will show you the power supply voltages, but there are many other problems a PSU could experience.

Also... what turns the computer on and off is the switch on the case... not the power supply.

well in that post #2, when you say “faulty power switch”. What would be a more detailed description of faulty power switch?
There’s nothing wrong with my wire or plug, tried two wires, and the psu switch responds to on and off no problem. But im assuming a switch defect wouldnt cause a screen displaying “shutting down” out of nowhere like I’m getting, and then turn it back on with no screen most times, in a repeated cycle. Figure it would just turn it off in a second with no “shutting down”?

There is no program to test PSU. A thorough ram test using Memtest86 takes hours depending on the amount of ram you have. Are you saying the computer did not power off during this time?

NO.

There's the switch on the back of the power supply. That's a heavy duty high voltage switch.

Then there's the switch on the front of the case. That's a low voltage switch with teeny tiny contacts.
If that switch is bad... you just replace it.

The case front panel power switch hooks to this location on your motherboard.... RED box on the bottom of the pic

There could be something like a cat hair or dust/dirt that's resting on those pins.
Things like the fans coming on... could move that hair or dust and short those pins together, which would turn the computer... ON.

Yes, using memtest86 right now. Finishing pass#4 all is good. 0 errors. It is running straight through withis usb boot. But I literally have bios restarting and any drive restarting. So it’s quite odd. I can have a drive windows boot last decent time here or there but not often. You mever know when it’s just going to shut down and start a reset process with a black screen. Then you have to power it off and keep trying until you get it recognizing the drive again and following through to windows. But there’s no promised time on your windows running. A few days ago it was about 40 minutes and a random shutdown... but the past two days have been within 1 minute. It got worse.
Bios has been better today though

Here’s some interesting info, years ago, whenever connecting a usb to the fromt of the case usb, it would sometimes reset the computer just putting the usb in.
Just info. Not matching this issue. But just to know

It’s just running the ram test right now. So it just passed.

I’ll turn it off and take out that switch. Blow on it and put it back. But it’s tightly in there right now

Well I just unplugged them, blew on it and plug them back in full. Made sure the wire wasn’t too pulled on going to the button in front. The only thing is though, shat tells me that’s not related is, everytime the system got into this start and shut down loop, after shutting down, that button wouldn’t respond at all for a few seconds. Then it would boot up on it’s own as you’ve seen. Constantly just boot on it’s own. Unless you think that’s possible with dust or air. But we’ll see.
A short is not impossible. But we’ll see

it can definitely mislead me, look okay for a half an hour and then shut down. What section of the data from v2 log would you check that would show the types of shutdowns? Ive seen them in event manager. Just wondering what file in v2

Just want to confirm as I’m testing it. Just ket ke know whatbthe best motherboard testing software is please. If there’s no psu, Im hoping there’s something thorough for. motherboard alone.

Indicate whether the RAM is or is not on the Qualified Vendor List (QVL).

Well , it rebooted on it’s own after saying PASS. That was ram alone. I assume that’s all it test? Or is there another option in there to chooose motherboard? It did say kingston on the test though (not no name). Not sure if that helps with QVL ?
