Solved BSOD and inability to start up now

Windows 11 - Updated automatically
I was in the process of downloading some mail when I got the BSOD (which I haven't seen for a few years). Now all attempts to startup fail. The few messages that appeared on screen just stated the obvious - unable to start and memory management problem. Everything seems to point to a system disk failure or memory failure. I can try and reinstall from scratch using a pendrive I have of Windows 11 but that fails after selection of drive to use.
I have a new SSD drive I can try. Worth a shot since nothing else works, and I have tried all the options.

Since I will effectively be installing a fresh copy of Windows 11 on a new disk will I have problems with registration since I don;t have a number?

Download Memtest, copy to USB drive, run the diagnostic: Memtest86+ | The Open-Source Memory Testing Tool

And just fyi, there is no "obvious" - the exact nature of error messages vary and are important to post. It may point to memory (ram), HD failure, driver errors, etc. In your case you say it's memory, so let's start there.

Hi, Ian. Not good news mate. I wonder what the hell is up with that?

You use a Microsoft account, you will have a digital licence at Microsoft if you use the same Microsoft account with the new install.

Are you sure you don’t want to post in the BSOD section and try work this out?
BSOD’s… not my expertise, Ian. I wish I were switched on so I could help you.

Don’t you have a system image/backup, if not why not?

Fails how?

You probably need to diskpart the partitions before you try reinstalling. (Remove partitions)

Ian, you may be failing with the install due to not prepping your install drive.

Disconnect any secondary drives first

During install, when this first window appears:

  • Hit the Shift + F10 keys
    • A command window will open
    • Press enter after typing in each command below and let it complete the command, you’ll know when each command is done as it will repeat the command to you or give a result for the command.
  • Type; diskpart [enter]
  • Type; list disk [enter]
  • Type; select disk X [enter]
    • X being the drive position/number of your install drive. Be careful that you are cleaning the right drive/disk, hence disconnecting any secondary drives. Don’t accidentally diskpart your USB Pen drive. It will have the disk size next to each disk entry.
  • Type; clean [enter]
  • Type; convert gpt [enter]
  • Type; exit [enter]
  • Close the command window
  • Continue with the install

Just a word of warning - MS have changed the installer and it fails to install 24H2.

After the first two keyboard screens, there is a link on 3rd screen to use previous installer.

You have to select that and it works fine.

No idea how MS could so badly screw up the new installer - it got dumped on new RTM users and never went via an Insider iso.

Antspants suggestion got me the furthest. Looked as if it was going to work butthebn stoppe with "Windows canniot install reuired files. make sure all the files required for the installation are available and restart the installation. Error code 0x800 7025D
maybe worth trying o download latest copy of Windows 11 to pendrive. The one I used was a few months old.

I think Ians install usb is a 23H2 (possibly even 22H2)

Ian, the latest ISO is 24H2. You have wnough problems without installing 24H2 just yet

I have a copy of 23H2 on my server. Will PM you the link in a second.

Maybe a dumb question but how can i run it on the PC when the only accessi have is via the abortive attempts of the Windows repair screens.

PS - memory errors show for all types of reasons, doesn't necessarily mean you have memory hardware issues. If you want to bother with it, post in the BSOD section and Zbook will most likely assist you.
Otherwise, you've been looking for an excuse to reinstall, you now have one.

Try that second SSD, Ian.
Remove the original & replace it with the spare.
Reseat the memory. (Take it out and push it back into place again) Take care.

If you get errors like this regarding that second drive, you’ll know for sure something else is wrong with other hardware.

That’s a weird message to receive when cleaning a drive via diskpart?

I have reached the point of taking PC to repair shop and if they can't find an answer at reasonable cost, I am upgrading the PC retaining what definitely works - case, drives, wires!
I have taken all drives out of the PC bar the SSD I use as the system drive. Refreshed it and formatted it during the install when those options came up. Made the necessary selections, screen turned blue and Installing Windows 11 - This may take some time screen appeared. Percentage started going up and the last one I saw was 26& then at some point shortly after that, a box pops ups - Windows installation has failed.

Have tried it various tim es with different installation Rufus created memory sticks and 23 and 24 versions. Also tried with a new drive.

I think that is the end of the line. PCPitStop shop tomorrow. To get a likely cost of repair versus upgrading.
