Solved BSOD and inability to start up now


Corrupted Bios maybe? Try removing the Bios battery for a minute then replace. It's also quite possible the cmos battery is weak and needs replacing.

Hi Ian.

If you wak in there and say repair vs upgrade, they’ll tell you that you need to upgrade.

Just ask them what is wrong with it. After they give you a quote, then ask them how much they can upgrade for.
Unless you know these guys (small town and all) they will always opt to support the most profitable option for them.

The reason for my comment was last year when I had a nightmare for months after building my current PC is I had TWO separate sets of faulty ram which meant that the PC wouldn't even boot into bios! I ran Memtest and it went crazy with errors.

I also agree it is most possibly the Ram. In my decades of computing, Ram issues have been the cause of the most obscure problems. Reseating the Ram is often helpful.
It’s just that I got the hint when talking to Ian that he is over it all.

I think the idea of a repair store is a viable option. I wouldn’t normally say that, that’s not why we’re in the forum, just to send them off.
But if Ian runs the memtest, finds out the ram is bad, buys new ram then discovers that Ram isn’t the only issue, he is back to going to the store.
Because it could very well be the motherboard or CPU as well or instead.

I have now given the PC to the local repair shop (who incidentally are among the members here and consider the forum brilliant and use it all the time). Unlike me, they were able to carry out the memory check advised by zbook and found one of the sticks to be faulty. They were sure this was the problem as they said that the Windows 11 installation made heavy use of memory. Anyway they are confident they can fix it, and in fact advised against upgrading as, like guys here, thought it would not be worth it as it was already a hi-spec machine.

Highly efficient (as you would expect from a repair shop who is also a member of this forum I discovered) repair of my PC. Cost was very reasonable, faulty memory stick replaced, Windows 11 re-installed, and machine stress tested (whatever that was). Now going through the somewhat tedious job of installing apps and getting it all back to how I am used to. He wouldn't give me an estimate for upgrade as he said I had a very good machine to start with and he would rather fix it.
Thank you all for your help, particularly Zbook and Antspants. Zbook - had I been able to get into my PC and carried out the memory tests I would have found the problem myself. Antspants both for his public and private help.

Can I suggest you uninstall those pesky apps we have had trouble with

Go to your Start Menu > All Apps (I think they renamed it to just ALL now)

Scroll down to “Mail & Calendar” (I think that is what it is called)
Right Click > uninstall.

Scroll down to “Outlook (New)”
Right Click > uninstall.

Then install Microsoft 365
It doesn’t have to be in that order.

And of course, goes without saying, holler if you need anything, Ian.

Prepare to get another USB flash drive, then get the ISO and use Rufus on another computer.
Pop-up error saying "Windows cannot install required files", is likely a bad USB drive. (If an error message box with that text keeps popping up after RAM replacement)

I have always thought that as my data is all on separate disks, and MS is constantly updating and it was a rare occasion it would be needed, I would probably do a new install.

Not everyone makes a system image, Ian. No need to be embarrassed.
If your software and settings requirements are hardly a chore, you can probably stay with the way you’re used to.
Especially since you use IMAP and secondary drives.
