I recently replaced the SSD on my wife's HP OMEN 17-cb00011nv laptop. See my relevant thread for details:

Naturally, I then wanted to check for Windows Updates. There was an UEFI Firmware (aka BIOS) update for which the installation of the final component failed and it reverted to the previous version. I then noticed that the brightness of the screen was changed to the minimum and trying to increase it from Windows made no difference no matter where the slider was. I thought this was because of the failed UEFI firmware upgrade, so I manually downloaded the latest available UEFI firmware directly from HP support site and tried again. This time the upgrade succeeded and I saw the screen brightness briefly recover during the upgrade, but when it was completed the brightness fall to lowest setting again making the screen hard to see. I Googled about it and discovered this is a known bug after upgrading to latest UEFI firmware versions and the only workaround to make the brightness normal again is to disable Secure Boot. When I visited UEFI firmware there was no direct option to disable Secure Boot in Security settings, I had to enable Legacy boot first in Boot settings. So I enabled Legacy boot, disabled Secure Boot, saved changes and restarted. Sure enough when loading Windows the brightness returned back to normal. I am not sure what causes that bug, but I suspect the latest UEFI firmware also upgraded the nVidia GOP (Graphics Output Protocol) which for some unknown reason defaults to lowest brightness. By enabling Legacy boot the nVidia card ignores GOP and boots in Legacy mode with normal brightness. If my suspicion is true, is there any utility I can download that can configure the GOP to boot in maximum brightness? It is rather late, so I cannot Google that now. If you can help I would appreciate it.

Thank you in advance.

Legacy MBR installation, no TPM, no Secure Boot, no WDDM 2.0 graphics drivers, no SSE4.2, cannot get more unsupported ;) This is only my test laptop. I had installed Windows 11 here before upgrading my main PC. For my main PC I use everyday see my 2nd system specs.

What size is your System Partition (very first partition on drive). If it is the standard 100MB, than some HPs have issues because it is too small. My wife's HP laptop had that problem and I had to use a combination of GPart and Mintool to enlarge the partition, while moving everything else to keep the correct order. In the end I was finally able to get the BIOS update to install.

Thank you for your reply, I don't remember what size is the first partition, but as I write on my other thread, there was another small partition after the Windows partition that I could not move to the right side of the disk so I could expand the Windows partition to take all unallocated disk space. I did that using Minitool Partition Manager. Do you think enlarging the first partition will solve the low brightness bug? I can't se how these are connected.
