Are you doing an upgrade from the previous version? If you're doing an upgrade you can keep everything. Oh and are you currently in the Dev or Beta channel??

Well.. you're options are limited. You can keep using Win 10 because the support you would get for 11 would be very limited, assuming you can install it. At this point a clean instillation of 10 is needed or if you have a backup copy of your 10 instillation you could use that.

...i went to try and install within windows and it went stright to clean install.

Are you in the Insider program? What build are you currently on? What did you use to try the install? If you're not an Insider did you get the ISO from UUPDump?

If you are currently on any W11 22000 build, or any W10 build, then you should be able to upgrade to 22000.194 from within Windows keeping all your installed apps and files.

If you are trying to upgrade from an earlier build but that option is greyed out or not available, then that is usually due to the ISO being for a different language than your currently installed Windows.

fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update.

up date i did a clean install for W11 22000 build 22000.194 no i think you will find the os build 22000.194 forced me to do a clean build and the chance to keep apps and files were greyed out in out side of windows, but its up and running now, but be warned if you go down the Beta channel route and you dont like it you only have 10 days when it comes out for real in oct 5th msn needs to clear up this confusion once and all ?

From my reading of your previous post you were using the Dev channel version and no, you can't go back to the Beta channel without reinstalling Windows. That's been mentioned and discussed here before. And the same will hold true if you're in the insider program and want to go to the RP version/channel. You'll have to perform another clean instillation.

this laptop was never enrolled in the IP. I use to have it a couple years ago on an old Surface Pro and then just wiped/reset it before getting rid of it. On my old Windows Phones i was always in the IP. :)

so you're basically telling me if I want to go Beta Insider on this HP laptop, just plan on staying in it, correct?

Dev channel and Beta channel are on different builds, Dev is on 22458 now, while Beta is 22000.194. The release will also be a 22000 build, so shouldn't it be possible to just step off the Beta IP channel without needing to clean install? You may end up on a slightly higher minor build number that the public release, but it should only take a CU or two for the public build to catch up with you.

There is of course another way to get 11 without joining Insiders (and the one I have taken). Use UUPDump to download a 22000 ISO and perform an in-place upgrade.

Can you explain what the below option in Insider Settings means, then?

Capture1.jpg

If you are on the Insider Beta or Release Preview Channel, when your computer updates to the RTM release via Windows Update, you will drop out of the beta program - if that option is turned on above.

If you installed a Beta or Release Preview Channel build from an ISO file, but did not enroll in the Beta Program, you should get the RTM release via Windows Update when it comes out - but if you don't, you can always just upgrade to the RTM build by downloading the ISO file and upgrading.

Keep in mind, the RTM upgrade will push out via Windows Update in stages. You may not see it in Windows Updates for months. That's why I always just download the ISO file and manually upgrade.

If you are the DEV channel, you are already past the RTM build. You will need to wait until the RTM release comes out and then, sometime in the future, there should be a way for you to step down into Beta and/or Release Preview. Once you step down into one of the channels, then you can again queue your computer to drop out of the insider program when the next RTM upgrade is released.

Can you explain what the below option in Insider Settings means, then?

View attachment 8424

I think you're right on that one based on what mine shows InkedScreenshot 2021-09-23 005345_LI.jpg

I would hope that users can go from the beta directly to the RP but I'm not sure at this point
They can Jeff, I have done it many times. (y)

It may be possible, but I would not consider it advisable, Microsoft do not have a great record of removing the old obsolete code from their operating systems when updating.

This is usually more of an annoyance than an issue .... but with a Beta release of the code there is going to be the additional code related to the nature of the beast ... the check code and the coding for the additional telemetry required to make the purpose of the Beta actually possible.

My system is to play with evaluate Dev and Beta code totally offline from my live working Operating system

When it comes to the time to update I will do this on a single copy of the latest OS, in this case, a fully patched and updated copy of Windows 10, and update with the official RTM or later any other updates will take place later when I am sure the test system is working satisfactorily to my needs.

For those who don't have a spare system but who still want to enjoy these builds without hosing up current OS or having to split internal HDD's into separate partitions / mess around with multi boot OS -- create these as WintoGo systems on external USB->SATA connected external devices -- Rufus does it easily (I've posted on these Forums how to do it) and it "isolates" your existing OS from the Dev / beta OS. No need for endless backups / restores of existing OS (although you should as a matter of course regularly back that up anyway). Response is fine - especially if external device is an SSD and connected via USB3/3,1/USBC. Even on USB2 its acceptable.

Cheers

If you are currently on the Beta channel and choose to remain on this channel after the RTM is released, (release preview is a third level of the prerelease system Microsoft uses). you may not see any beta releases until mid to late 2022, Microsoft have stated that Windows 11 will run on a once annual upgrade cycle so it could be this time next year until the next windows release is live and Beta builds would normally not be released until a few months before planned release, as with the current system.

If you wish to be ahead of the general users the best long term plan is to run at least one system on the release preview, this will give you an early copy of all upgrades and updates that are released - this will only be a few weeks at most, and could contain minor last minute bugs but is a useful system, especially if you have multiple systems in use or you are managing for others .

As the development progresses on the next full release schedule there nothing to stop anyone from signing up an Offline test system to the Dev or Beta channel to check progress
