Can anyone recommend a duplicate file finder program?

I use a Virtual Machine to try out programs like this, just to make sure i dont mess anything up, worth the try?
Or you could make a backup or snapshot, that works too.
Respect!

Alldup is a good one I've used in the past, another more recent addition to my repertoire is one developed by the guy who makes my go to file manager - Xplorer². It's called I-DeClone. It's not free, but there is a 30-day free trial.

Announcement of the software at the main dev's page: xplorer² blog: i-DeClone remove duplicate and similar files

Software home page: i-DeClone clean-up duplicate and similar files

I'm not affiliated with the company in any way, just love the software that he has written and bought them all because they're that good for my uses.

Awesome thanks. Yeah I used to use that file explorer also best one until I found OneCommander. Nothing like it out there in style looks and function in one. But ty for the software recommendation.

Oh, wow, thanks for that - it looks modern as heck, and though I've really, really gotten used to X² over the last ...argh well over 15 years (!), I've got to give this one a try. And I'm also giving Yair's Files app a try too, though it is extremely basic for a dual pane, multi-tabbed FM.....

Hi there

@Kol12
If you have Ms EXCEL just dump directory listings into EXCEL - then easy to find duplicates.

in cmd go to directory you want e.g cd c:\
then dir c:\ > doggs.csv
then open as csv with excel

Screenshot_20220506_114025.png

Then you can massage around every which way.

repeat as often as needed. There's probably an easy script to run the command "recursively" -- my Windows knowledge isn't great on this stuff but if I can use basic Ms apps like Office that work I've no problem

Robocopy piped to csv output or xcopy might also be alternatives too , Once stuff is in EXCEL it's a doddle. simply instead of in cmd prompt list to console route to csv file via using ">" output file. If you want a text file pipe to .txt instead of .csv but ensure your text file is utf-8 for most european languages rather than ANSI otherwise you might get some weird results in Excel.

Cheers
jimbo

The above works great for those wanting to find files with similar / identical file names - but does absolutely nothing for finding files with similar / identical content.

One thing I do with such programs is uncheck duplicate file names since a folder cannot hold 2 or more files of the exact same name, force looking at content instead.

Great when you're looking for duplicate content in a single location. But when including multiple locations, then probably better to keep that setting enabled.

BTW, the i-DeClone app I mentioned earlier is going to be 50% off tomorrow and Sunday (7-8 May). I just got an email from the dev this morning.
