Solved can I change File Type in Explorer?

Windows 11 Pro
New to Windows 11 on a regular basis (coming from W7 inch by inch). One of the big negatives for W11 is the default photo viewer. I managed to find "Classic 7 Photo Viewer" somewhere (Store?) and installed it. Much happier with the familiar fast and snappy photo viewer. However, this file type is horrible visually. Can I force it to be .jpg (.png or whatever it is)?

Hey mate, :alien:

Usually, you'll need to open the image in the app you want, then "Save as" the image with the file type you want. It just depends on which file types are supported by the app.

I don't understand. It is a .jpg file. I want the file type Column in explorer to also say .jpg.

What it shows in the column depends on the app.

The Properties page in your screenshot shows "Classic 7 Photo Viewer (.jpg)" for the file type. Is the "Type" column in File Explorer expanded out enough to see the same?

I must be misunderstanding your request. The file types shown are already .jpg files. Classic 7 photo viewer is opening them as .jpg.
There are quite a number of popular photo viewers out there. IrfanView is very popular as is ImageGlass and Fast Stone Image Viewer. There are tons more.
I'm not a photophile myself so hopefufully others will give you their suggestions.

Here is file explorer in another W11 system. The app that opens the file is not in the Type field. The TYPE field should be Windows' definition of what the file type is. Not the app that opens it.

I guess the answer is NO, I cannot change that field. The software behavior is controlling that field.

Could be that they also abuse (IMO) the Explorer Type column.

If you set the Photos app as your default app for opening .JPG files, then the I believe you get the result you want

If you right click on the heading bar (RED dot), and then click More... you'll get the option to choose what column headings you want.

Thanks, but I've got the headings I want. The type column is displaying the type incorrectly (IMO)

I'm on 25H2 and my photos show like this

I used Brinks regedit fix for "restore legacy photo viewer" Restore Windows Photo Viewer app in Windows 11
which restores the older W7 type photo viewer.

AFAIK, filetype in that column will always be associated with the default application. That is why your image is showing that 7 Photo Viewer app filetype.

How to change the description for .jpg files in Windows 11:

1. Press Win+R, type regedit, and press Enter.
2. Go to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.jpg
3. Look at the (Default) value. It will be something like jpgfile or jpegfile.
4. Go to the matching key, for example HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\jpgfile
5. Edit the (Default) value in that key to the description you want, such as “JPEG Image File”.
6. Restart File Explorer by opening Task Manager, finding Windows Explorer, right‑clicking it, and choosing Restart.

Then why doesn't yours show the type as "Windows Photo Viewer" rather than JPG? The app I am using is just dumb.

Not a fan of regedit patches, but I may reconsider.

Just another reason why I put off leaving W7 for so long. I am hoping that the successor Photos app might be a decent replacement for Picture Manager for quick edits and resizing. Haven't needed that functionality yet. Not looking forward to it.

Good try and it makes sense, but the default value in that key was "JPEG Image". But that gave me the idea to search for "Classic 7 Photo Viewer" as data. A few hits like this key, but surely not what I need:

I believe because it is a default windows app, rather than third party.

I suspect the OP is a little confused about how Windows/File Explorer defines the "type" of file - Explorer is indicating the file type as a JPG file, where as the OP is defining the file "type" by the software in which it opened (Windows Photo Viewer). A file "type" is determined by the file name extension, not by the software it uses.

What the OP wants is not how Windows Explorer defines/indicate file types. In this case, it is a misappropriation of the meaning of file "type", by relating it to the software

However, this only applies to Windows/File Explorer. In, for example, Settings > Apps > Default apps, the file types are listed as "(software) JPG file" (e.g. in my case, Irfanview JPG file)

Search the registry for FriendlyTypeName and when you find the entry relating to .jpg change that FriendlyTypeName from an app file pointer to the text you prefer or just delete that key; then restart explorer.

Thank you @Edwin for showing your explorer output. I see it is a choice by apps if they takeover that field or leave it alone. I tried another 3rd party app (One Photo Viewer) and it retained the Windows file type of "JPG" in that column. And it seemed to do the job fine. Then I realized I have another photo viewer on my system from bringing over Picasa (desktop) from my W7 machine to my new W11 machine. It also retains "JPG" in that column. And it's actually a pretty good viewer because I can go right into edit mode if necessary with full access to my photo library. I will uninstall 7 Classic Photo Viewer. After 20+ years of seeing JPG in that column, I couldn't stand seeing all that clutter. Maybe a little OCD :D

@BruceR Thankfully, found another way to get the job done.
