Solved can I change File Type in Explorer?

Probably you need mean to change the default icon for jpg images. If this is what you want, there is no easy way to do that like in Windows 7 that you could do it from Windows Explorer (known as File Explorer in Windows 11). You have to open the Registry editor, find the .jpg extension entry and modify the default icon key to point to your custom image or icon. Sorry, I am posting this from my smartphone and I cannot give you exact details.

No, the icon was not a problem. That seems appropriate to me for a 3rd party app to do that. Just shouldn't be changing the fileTYPE.

I have seen this "issue" with applications that open many file different types. For example if you install WinZip you will see "WinZip" file instead of zip or rar etc. One advantage of this is that if I want to customise the icon for all the file types WinZip can open, I can change the "WinZip" entry, rather than change all the individual extensions one by one.

You can convert to any type but you can't do that in Windows Explorer. But I'm not sure I understand the question, if you don't like Classic 7 Photo Viewer" you can open JPG with another application, right ? Obviously, you'll need to install the application first.

It's simply the default Application association vs the generic extension thing.

If you don't like the default association description, you could reset your defaults and use Open with... every single time! P-I-T-A though!

Like I said, most archive formats WinZip can open have the same description "WinZip file" or similar. Same for your chosen Image viewer application. If you want individual description for each format you must modify the respective Registry keys.
