Yes, it's on the centre pin and uses the 1-Wire protocol. The power is on the outer and inner sleeve.

Genuine Dell laptop power supplies use the 1-Wire protocol to send data via the third wire to the laptop computer about power, current and voltage ratings. The laptop will then refuse charging if the adapter does not meet requirements.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

I think that is only true when the laptop power socket is three pin. His is two pin

Thanks for the replies. My brother lives in a terrace so has neighbours either side. He has a generator, but noise is an issue. I use a motorcycle battery without a motorcycle, a universal laptop charger and the battery is 7Ah. I get at least seven hours internet. For anyone buying a small generator, remember that motors draw a lot of current when starting and the generator should be twice as powerful as the motor as a minimum.

This is not correct. The charger needs to at least match the power required by the laptop and the voltage has to be close, but not exact.

To remove any confusion. My brother wants two solutions. One for his laptop and one for his router. My router solution works well. But a 7Ah battery wont power a laptop for long. He will end up buying two universal chargers where the voltage output is set manually. Of these, I can't find any that output 19.5V, hence my post.

There are many chargers on the market that claim Dell compatibility. But, yes - any charger probably needs a three-pin barrel plug to persuade the Dell to accept charge. His is 65W so most will suffice. He will probably use Amazon in case it doesn't work properly.

My very old HP Mini requires 19.5V but charges well at 19V with my Maplins universal charger, so I'll mark this thread as solved.

You are not helping anyone with your so-called correction, a laptop is designed to work with a certain voltage. When the voltage is too high or too low, it can damage the device. That's why it's important that the replacement charger has the same output voltage as the original charger. When you say voltage can be closer how close you don't mention as maybe OP or even i don't know this close means i stay with safe option and replace the charger same voltage as the replaced adapter or lets OP know that the 5% higher voltage is safe but again risky move if you are not sure what this means.

I don't mean to contradict you, but a 65 Watt charger will not keep a 90W laptop running when it's switched on, so the wattage does matter.

May I politely suggest that you post in your own langauge and add a translation using Google Translate?
