I will be getting a new Dell desktop PC with Win11 Home. Will I be able to downgrade it to Win10 without having to pay for a new Win10 license?

I just purchased a new HP laptop that came with Windows11 already installed. I really really really don't like windows11. Is there a way to revert or go back to windows10 when it was a factory install? I know with updates you had 10 days after activation to revert...is this possible with a new...

    Still assembled, still runs. Haven't turned it on for 15 years?
If the new device is on Intels 12th gen CPU with Little.Big architecture, I don't recommend downgrading to Windows 10. Windows 11 supports these CPUs 100% while 10 only has partial support and can get confused in certain scenarios. So keep that in mind.

Actually, I do not think this is true - like all things a small portion downgrade but vast majority of public probably do not even know how to.

Seems like the pattern is holding: One very good OS followed by a not-very-good OS. To wit: XP was good. Vista was not. Win7 was good. Win 8.x was not. Win10 was good. Win11, not so much. Half-baked, not well thought out. It might yet morph into a decent OS, but right now I'd like to stick with Win10 until such time or the clock runs out in 2025.

Thanks. I don't think my new PC will have a 12th gen CPU.

Not everyone, apparently. The latest AdDuplex report for February 2022 shows Windows 11 on 19.3% of the world's W10/11 PCs, only just behind Windows 10 version 21H2 at 21%.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to lid hinges starting to break up this laptop has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    I've now clean installed 25H2 and used Garlin's scripts to update Secure Boot to CA 2023 and revoke the PCA 2011 certificates. It's new role is to test secure boot issues.

    Info for 2021-2026:
    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    My SYSTEM SIX is a Dell Latitude 5550, Core Ultra 7 165H, 64GB RAM, 1TB NVMe SSD, supported device, Windows 11 Pro, Hyper-V host machine. Updated to 25H2 on 30th September 2025.

    My SYSTEM SEVEN is a Lenovo Thinkpad T580, 1920x1080 touchscreen, Intel Core i7-8650U, 16GB RAM, 512GB NVMe SSD + 2nd 512GB NVMe SSD, a supported device for Windows 11. This is my current general purpose 'main machine'. The installed Windows 11 Home from my System One has been migrated to this machine. As its new home has an existing digital licence for Pro I've been able to upgrade the migrated OS from Home to Pro.

I don't think Windows 11 got the open arms reception that MS was expecting to see.

I like Windows 11, but I truly believe that MS jumped the gun when they released it to the public. They should have given the Insiders more time to test it so the OS could have been more developed. I honestly think that MS released before being ready so that it would help increase the sales of new devices in time for the holidays.

When it comes to surveys, I always take them with a grain of salt. The first thing I always ask myself is, who took the survey and what do they have to gain from it. Even if the numbers are correct that doesn't mean that everyone who is running Windows 11 because they wanted Windows 11. They could have purchased a new device that just happened to have Windows 11 installed. They could have seen the option to upgrade from Windows 10 and thought that they had to upgrade. There's no way to know the true numbers of those who are running Windows 11 because they wanted to.

I agree. The latest Dev build now has some of the features that were notably absent in the retail release: Drag and Drop to a running app on the taskbar, and combining apps in groups on Start, for example.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to lid hinges starting to break up this laptop has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    I've now clean installed 25H2 and used Garlin's scripts to update Secure Boot to CA 2023 and revoke the PCA 2011 certificates. It's new role is to test secure boot issues.

    Info for 2021-2026:
    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    My SYSTEM FIVE is a Dell Latitude 3190 2-in-1, Pentium Silver N5030, 8GB RAM, 1TB NVMe ssd, supported device running Windows 11 Pro, plus Insider Beta, Experimental 263xx and 29xxx builds (and a few others) as a native boot .vhdx.

    My SYSTEM SIX is a Dell Latitude 5550, Core Ultra 7 165H, 64GB RAM, 1TB NVMe SSD, supported device, Windows 11 Pro, Hyper-V host machine. Updated to 25H2 on 30th September 2025.

    My SYSTEM SEVEN is a Lenovo Thinkpad T580, 1920x1080 touchscreen, Intel Core i7-8650U, 16GB RAM, 512GB NVMe SSD + 2nd 512GB NVMe SSD, a supported device for Windows 11. This is my current general purpose 'main machine'. The installed Windows 11 Home from my System One has been migrated to this machine. As its new home has an existing digital licence for Pro I've been able to upgrade the migrated OS from Home to Pro.

    My SYSTEM EIGHT is a 2-in-1 convertible Lenovo Yoga 11e (5th gen) type 20LN, Celeron N4120, 8GB RAM, 512GB NVMe ssd, a supported device for Windows 11. Currently running Windows 11 Pro, plus Insider Beta, Experimental 263xx and 29xxx builds as native boot vhdx.
Even if Win 11 had no bugs and worked perfectly, The new GUI throws off those that hate change. The same happened with Win 10.

Just to be clear, and to state it in the terms as Microsoft use them, what is stored in the firmware is the Product Key, and this is agnostic as far as W11 or W10 is concerned. The key is valid for Windows 10/11.

A Digital Licence is what is stored on Microsoft's activation servers and is linked to the Hardware ID of the PC. Every PC that has had 10 or 11 installed and activated has a Digital Licence on the activation servers. This Digital Licence is also agnostic, and will activate a clean install of the same edition (Home or Pro) whether it is 10 or 11.
