Can one identify the actual cause of an update failure?

It's no good getting Win updates only to have them fail to install and give some useless code like "0x800f0991 error".
Isn't there some way or log that tells you what the actual reason for failure is?

Sure there are update logs. If one can interpret Microsoft speak, they might be of benefit. Upgrade logs are stored elsewhere.

It will be quicker to do a repair install which usually fixes such problems than plough through the error logs!
