I searched the forum for a answer but found none on my ?

I have a external Samsung SSD w/ Windows 11 b22000.282 installed, activated & running well whichever PC I plug-it-into.
My question is: has anyone here updated their 22000.xx build to a 22494 or newer test build (I just snagged a 'insider preview client' .ISO copy from MS DL page).
It would be nice if if would update also even though that SSD is not on a MS insider account.

If not I suppose I can test what I want to do & reply here.

TIA

Yes, you can update to the Insider builds. If you decide to update to the Dev build the only way to go back is to use an image to do a restore before you updated or to do a clean install. The image can be the one Windows makes so you can rollback (It's time limited) or an image you make with a program such as Macrium Reflect free. (No time limit)

The other thing to be aware of is that the current preview builds are still at the DEV level so may be more unstable and liable to crash your system. I would not use it on your only, or a main system and regularly backup so you have a better chance of recovery from a serious crash

You should be able to do that.
I am just not sure what benefit you would get if you do so. Insider builds are not suppose to replace anything but to keep them running on their own because they can be buggy. It is essentially just like enabling Windows Insider Program without the ability to download updates or future releases.

I run both separately in one machine.

I am thinking I will hold off on trying this until I receive (in 5 days) the new Samsung EVO 250 GB SSDs
instead of gambling on (breaking?) the one I have that runs great now.
--
Its really quite fast & easy to install Windows 11 on a external SSD anyway.
My problem is if WSA will transfer over over even though I will chose save apps & files before update.

I'm using Rufus to create Windows 11 Windows toGo on external SSD drives (actually NVMe) and it's quite simple to do - and it tests the OS on your hardware which is always an advantage

I was anxious to try the update to 22499 so I tried a used WD Blue SSD I had laying around.
After WU updated Windows 11 to b22000.318 I tried mounting the Windows 11 b22499 ISO & running setup.
I Disconnected the internet & the Setup went smooth until it got to "Checking your PC" that's when I got this error (below)
--
I suppose I need to turn on Secure Boot but the install on a SSD was no problem w/ b22000.xxx on this drive.
I'll try again when the Samsung SSDs arrive
*Interesting fact: After installing W11 b22000.xxx it became automatically activated, I'll definitely take that.

I can see this thread has gotten off track from OP.
So for the above ? Re. W2G booting.
Instead of using W2G to create my Win10/Win11 External plug-in any PC disk I used another application.
below is my F8 (others only work w/ F9 or F12) menu & dual boot manager on the Samsung EVO SSD.

Just as predicted my external Samsung EVO SSD Windows 11 b22000.318 would not let me update to Insider Windows 11 22499 giving me the same as above requirements error.

So I just did a clean install of 22499 w/o any problem, it even was auto activated when I checked activation status.

I tried updating to a newer insider build but all I got was 22499.1010

I imagine if I would have left the internet connected on during my 22499 install & jumped through the MS account hoops, I still would not been able to update to newer insider build either.
So going this route I suppose I'll just have to do a clean install for newer insider builds.
