Solved Cannot access admin share in workgroup

Windows 11 for Workstations
I have a set of W11 PCs in a workgroup. I just built a new W11 PC and added it to the workgroup. If I attempt to access an admin share on the new PC from one of the other PCs, I get access denied, even though the same userid/password is defined on both systems. I even tried specifying the username and password manually and got the same error.

I did enable admin shares on the new PC.

Puzzled - I guess there's something I've forgotten to do, but what?

You can try disabling SMB signing. Windows 11 supports it, but the encrypted sessions don't always setup correctly in a workgroup. Do this on two PCs just to try it out. If this ends up not being it, you can turn it back on.

From an administrative PowerShell session:
Powershell: 
Set-SmbClientConfiguration -EnableSecuritySignature $false -RequireSecuritySignature $false
Set-SmbServerConfiguration -EnableSecuritySignature $false -RequireSecuritySignature $false

Let's be very clear about what "amin share" you are trying to connect to: Are you talking about the built-in share named Admin$ or any of the other predefined shares like C$, etc.? If so, your inability to connect to this share is by design and expected behavior. The predefined shares are NOT intended to be connected to by a user account (even an Administrator).

If you create a new share yourself, can you connect to that? If so, it is working as intended.

The built-in C$ share is not intended for user access. Create a new share of your own for the same location (the root of the C: drive). Call it whatever you want. Add the $ at the end of the share name if you want it to be a hidden share.

Nonsense - it was around for years, and all admins used it. Someone in MS decided that the name drive$ was of itself a security exposure which it why they disabled it by default (whatever the merits of that view).

Thanks for the feedback. You folks are correct, of course. It turns out that I incorrectly came to that conclusion based upon some outdated information.

Way back in the dark ages (Windows XP) there were some differences with those pre-defined shares. If I recall correctly, I think that a user was somehow forced into guest access permissions even if they were an admin connecting to those shares remotely. I believe that has all changed with the introduction of UAC. I'd have to look up the details, but bottom line is that I got this one as wrong as I possibly could.

I also have not had my coffee yet today, so I'll use that as my excuse. :-)

Thanks again for the corrections - I can always count on people to let me know when I get it wrong and that is a good thing!
