cannot figure out running repositories off github etc.

no matter how many videos i watch or tutorials i follow, if im left to try and run a python or go or something similar repository, i crash and burn everytime lol i dont know why or how or what to do next, or what im doing wrong lmao i can only make them work if i follow a step by step video. hopeless lol

I don’t know. I am just posting to welcome you and to let you know, you are not alone. It does my head in also. Someone here will. But not me. In fact, I don’t know where I can even post on a page to ask in Github. I’m hilariously inadequate.

Most repositories relate to Linux and unless you have WSL (Windows Subsystem for Linux) installed and configured, you would not be able to use them.

I don't advise installing WSL unless you know what you are doing. WSL can change a lot of things and unless you know how to put things right, it may disrupt your regular Windows usage.

However, there are now some Windows specific repositories out there, but I would NOT advise you to use them without having knowledge of what they do and how they work etc... Most are still WSL/Linux related.

If you give us some clues as to what you want to do, maybe we can help you further.

hi. thanks for the response.
I dont want to do anything specific really. it started with network chuck to be honest, he did a walkthrough of project sherlock with docker and it seemed so easy. so whenever im led to github for anything i always think this will be the same - its not. its always "you need go to run this, you do not have git installed, python is not a recognized command line cmdlet lol its all so frustrating. I repair vehicles for a living, i can fix anything on even the newest most advanced systems including hs, ms and lin bus network right down to "my car makes this funny noise when i do this" BUT, to know all these commands and direction required to run certain programs and the capabilities of what PCs can actually do is a super impressive and admired talent in my eyes. some ppl make it look so simple. bravo

Without having a clear goal, it is difficult to advise you on what to accept and what to reject.

The best advice I can give you though, is to read through any instructions slowly and read them more than once, before you ever start doing anything. Same goes for videos, watch them several times before you do anything.

Quite often you will pick up on things you missed the first time through.

Try to have the instructions/video open beside you, while you work through it, step by step.

If you do have a specific task in mind though, or a set of instructions/video, let us know ... we can certainly confuse you even more ... free of charge ... lol

Don't feel bad - I've been dealing with Github for about 6 years because that's where most of the firmware for 3D printers is located. Whiteout a doubt Github has by far the worst UI of anything I've come across in my entire life. I still haven't figured out how Github works - or is supposed to work, or why so many people use it. My guess is it was originally built by Unix/Linux people who seem to have a totally different idea about how software is supposed to work. Regrettably, there is so much stuff on it that it would be impossible to change to something with a reasonable UI.

That's because working with other people's work is 10 times more difficult than making your own stuff, especially when dealing with open source because in more than 50% of the code you can find doesn't build out of the box, there is always some bug that makes the build fail and then you have to adjust a bunch of things to make it work.
