Solved Cant boot PC (main system) USB over current

I am getting a message on boot before BIOS is accessible on my “System One” PC:

USB Device over current status detected.
System will shut down after 15 sec

Anyone seen this before? I have never seen this before on any PC

EDIT. I have a reset CMOS button on the rear of my PC. Not sure if I should take that avenue?

I've not seen it either in building/repairing computers last couple three decades. However, I'd wonder how the ATX-style motherboards with their always having power to them, regardless of how they are shut down, unless unplugged fits into the situation. I'd unplug from all power and try again.

Either have I in the same time period.

Burton that is logical, I will unplug everything. I have many USB devices. I fear it may be my Corsair keyboard, which will be a huge problem. If I can’t plug it in without causing issues, I can’t try to resolve the keyboard issue.

Getting ahead of myself. Will read and unplug.

To avoid power issues with my Desktop I use a self-powered 4-port USB 3 Hub with each port controlled by a switch. I now have a 1TB USB 3 drive, a Dual-Bay Drive Dock and 2 x 4TB Self-Powered HDDs connected. My USB 2 keyboard and mouse are connected directly to the computer.

I have 4 of them.

I have 6 USB-3 ports & 4 USB 2 (or A) ports on the back panel of my board.
I have 2 x USB3 & 2x USB2 on the top of my case.

And 4 of these USB-C powered Hubs with 4 x USB-3 Ports on each, plugged into a power boards.

So I fixed this.


I reset the CMOS, and used a 2nd Corsair keyboard to enter the BIOS.
As I couldn’t access the BIOS with this issue, and unplugging my main Corsair keyboard and using the lesser secondary keyboard, I was able to access the BIOS and reset to defaults.

I unplugged the secondary and plugged the main Corsair K95 RGB PLATINUM back in — I got the same over current message.
Obviously it’s the Corsair K95.

My Corsair K95 RGB PLATINUM needs two USB inputs, I have used it for a few years without issue but it’s now for whatever reason, causing an over current.

It has been plugged into the same two USB-3 ports on the rear of my PC for the same period.
It seems, that removing the Corsair K95 from the USB 3 ports and plugging both USB cables in to 2 USB-A ports on the rear of the PC, enabled me to boot again and the K95 is working. It doesn’t make sense.

I don’t get what or why? As I said, a few years without issue in the same USB-3 Ports and all of a sudden it doesn't like it.
The USB-3 ports it was using are OK, I tested them with a USB mouse.

USB plugs comes in pairs...don't grab USB extra power from same USB cluster as the main (data) connection is. This should at least help reduce current strain on that particular USB pair. With age, RGB keyboards begin to use more power than they are rated for so make sure you use a plug for power that can give more than 1000mA of current. USB 2 can only provide 500mA according to specs, and USB3 provide 1000mA at least, although there are exceptions to this when some vendors "do their own thing", providing more power that the rated specs.

It is possible that those 4 ports are connected to same power rail...better would be to use the one under the eth-port for power. But the arrow in the pic are pointing at the ports I would also try.

It used to be much much worse, where for motherboards from back in the legacy-BIOS days, there was reportedly a bug where the BIOS throws that error, if you have more than 2 GB of RAM or something like that! IIRC, it was with an Asus socket 939 motherboard. (maybe socket 754?)
It was a very strange case where it involved an Asus A8V or other model from the same time frame at another message board.

The way that you talk about the error suddenly occurring, sounds starkly like the Asus "chassis intruded" fault on what appears to be on socket 775 motherboards. The fix is literally a component bypass mod, as you can't toggle the chassis intrusion function in the BIOS setup!

I never even remember seeing that reported with a UEFI-BIOS-era system.

I prefer having it in the USB-3 slots due to their being a USB-3 slot on my K95. I use it as a quick plug-in for USB thumb drives as it’s handy to access. Speeds are better also when plugged into USB-3.
