Can't change Pagefile to the way it was before even after following instructions on how to do so.

So about a year ago I changed the Pagefile on my computer because I was advised to do so in order to get a particular videogame to work. Over the last year my computer has suffered numerous crashes whenever Chrome has been open for a couple of hours. I think the altering of the pagefile is responsible for the numerous crashes. When Chrome crashes I have to restart the computer. It's a Ryzen 7 computer with 16GB of ram. Only a year old. Worked perfectly before the altering of the pagefile.

Here's a compilation of the kinds of error messages I get when I leave Chrome on for a couple of hours: Screenshot-Group-30th-March
As you can see from the image these are error messages from numerous applications stating in one way or another that they have crashed due to memory issues.

I changed the pagefile back to what is recommended as shown in this screenshot: Page-File-Issue-29th-April
But as you can see it currently says the allocated space is way over the recommended figure even after I typed it in, set it, clicked apply etc and restarted the computer. I'm not sure what to do? I tried to get chat support from Microsoft but when I do it just says "I am not the owner of this case". I have no idea what this means.
Recently I've given the pagefile a custom value that is the same figure as what is recommended and I've also selected C drive and clicked on "System managed". I set it, applied the changes and restarted my computer and it still has a the "Total paging file size for all drives" set to 49512MB.

It's like it's locked or something? Why wont it change? My version of Windows 11 is not activated and I'm wondering is that the reason I'm prevented from changing the pagefile back to the way it was before?

Not being activated can be an issue is some things, maybe that setting is one. Getting to the setting on Win11 is a bit different from Win10, my Win11 Notebook from Oct. with 8GB RAM:

With a pagefile with min and max set the same... the computer shouldn't crash, unless you are severely overusing the pagefile, and the RAM.

With the Pagefile on System Managed... the pagefile will be much larger.

When changing the pagefile settings, you need to do it in separate steps.
Like this...

Delete the old min/max pagefile, from whatever drive it's on, then reboot.
THEN set up the System Managed pagefile, and reboot again.
The rebooting, forces the pagefile settings to... actuate.

I have MY pagefile set to min/max of 3072/3072 and haven't had any crashes.
My system is similar (almost identical), to yours.

I always set the pagefile (both min/max), at some even multiple of 1024.
I don't think that matters, but it seems like a good idea to me.
Computers seem to like, powers of two. Or even multiples of powers of two. :)

Like 1024 or 2048 or 3072 or 4096... etc.

Software seems to like powers of two as well. Back in the day, the biggest number you could have in Diablo II was 65536, or some whole number multiple of that number.
65536 divided by 1024... = 64. :)

NOTE: When I say even multiples of 1024... I don't mean even/odd. I mean whole number multiple, like 1, 2, 3, 4, etc.

If you went even further and only used 1024 multiplied by a power of two, like 2, 4, 8, 16, 32... etc., your computer would probably do this...

When you say "delete the old min/max pagefile" are you saying I should set them to zero and THEN reboot. Or to just backspace both figures, set and apply and THEN reboot.

And a step I do mostly on older computers right after the first reboot with the 0 setting is defrag the HDD then reboot and set max and min the same. The defrag puts all the parts of the file contiguous to each other and helps in speeding up reading the data, not so important on SSD drives.

When I say Delete... I mean set it to "No paging file", then reboot.
You'll get a warning... just ignore it.
Then set either System Managed or min/max as described above.

But your crashing is probably being caused by something else.

I don't think your paging file settings can cause a crash... unless you're doing something crazy like...

...running Chrome with 100 open tabs, while rendering huge pictures in Photoshop, while streaming, and while playing a AAA game on Ultra settings... all at the same time.

The "reason" you will see many recommendations for using a min/max paging file, is that in the old days, Windows didn't manage the paging file properly. This caused the paging file to get fragmented as it grew or shrank, in size.

Since Windows 10, they've pretty much solved that problem. Or at least made it so the fragmentation doesn't matter.
I'd say the majority, just leave it set on System Managed.

If the size of the System Managed paging file is causing you a problem... just get a bigger SSD.
But you should be fine with your 1TB SSD. :)

Your crashes (0xe0000008), are more likely being caused by old chipset driver, or old BIOS version... or bad RAM settings, in the BIOS.

Latest chipset driver: https://www.amd.com/en/support/kb/release-notes/rn-ryzen-chipset-3-10-08-506

Latest non-beta BIOS version for your mobo is 4204... (click on... See All Downloads)

NOTE: If you do decide to flash the BIOS (update it), there are a few things to know.

1. The BIOS file that you download needs to be renamed. ASUS includes a renaming tool to do that.
2. After you rename it... put the BIOS file on a USB stick, then follow these directions...
3. Always set the BIOS to defaults, before you flash.

Image1.png Image2.png

Just in case you don't see the big RED box on that pic... do NOT EVER flash the BIOS over the internet.
One tiny internet glitch, while flashing the BIOS could kill your motherboard.

I was able to change the pagefile to 2933mb following your suggestion. But now the crashes occur faster now lol! Instead of occurring after using Chrome for a couple of hours it now takes only 30 mins approx for the crashes to occur.

I should have stated that when I originally assembled my computer I used a AMD RX5700XT but I replaced it with a RTX 2070 Super. Could the older RX5700XT drivers be causing me the crashing issues? I didn't have any problems a few months after replacing the AMD card.

It probably won't make a difference, but don't make the page file 2933 MB.
Make it some whole number multiple of 1024MB. Like 2048, or 4096.

@segamegadive

It probably won't make a difference, but don't make the page file 2933 MB.
Make it some whole number multiple of 1024MB. Like 2048, or 4096.
Thanks for the advice.

I set it to System Managed Size and I restarted my computer to see if it might fix the issue. If the problem persists I'll follow your advice and I'll get back to you soon.

Just in case you don't see the big RED box on that pic... do NOT EVER flash the BIOS over the internet.
One tiny internet glitch, while flashing the BIOS could kill your motherboard.
See I think I did this already a few months ago. I updated everything in the BIOS.
However I don't think I did anything regarding the chipset driver. I'm just wondering how would I be able to find out what version of the chipset driver I have at the moment before I decide to install the driver on the link you provided to the AMD website?

Also just to add to my last reply: When I clicked on the AMD link you provided and downloaded the chipset download package I'm presented with the following options: AMD-Chipset-Driver

I'm not sure which one I'm supposed to select?

EDIT: I just installed all of the selected in that image I uploaded and I installed the chipset driver for my Ryzen 7 3700X even though it was probably unnecessary. The BIOS version I have is "Version 3603 ,20/03/2021"

On the chipset driver, you want to install all of them.... as you surmised.

As for the BIOS version, I would definitely flash the BIOS to the version I mentioned above.
You are currently on a pre Windows 11 BIOS (going by the date).
There were some Windows 11-centric changes made, to the BIOS of most motherboards.

Okay so, four hours ago I installed those chipset drivers and I upgraded the BIOS to the 4403(which I only realized now is the most recent BETA version and not the one you specifically referred to.). It's been four hours and I have between 40 and 50 tabs open in Chrome and the PC has yet to crash.
HOWEVER about 10 minutes ago I did see that a tab in Chrome crashed and say "Ran out of memory". But the computer has yet to have frozen completely yet which is significant. I don't think it's gone this long without it crashing since the problem started happening.

Do you think I should install the latest non BETA BIOS like you originally recommended?

EDIT: Here's the "run out of memory" thing I saw in Google Chrome 15 minutes ago: Aw-snap
The PC has yet to freeze.

Okay so update. Google Chrome finally crashed just now and I had to restart the PC. So it appears that the Chipset installations etc didn't solve the issue unfortunately.
Did I mention that I originally had an AMD 5700 XT graphics card installed in my machine that I replaced with a 2070 Super. Would the older drivers of the 5700XT on my system be causing this issue at all?

I have a younger brother who's always downloading games etc and I'm wondering did he download something malicious that can't be found with anti virus software? Will I just reinstall Windows completely to see if that will solve the issue?

Reinstall is always an option. Most of us use restore from a backup rather than reinstall.
But if you don't have a backup... then reinstall is an option.

As for the vid card driver... generally, we use DDU (Display Driver Uninstaller), to remove old drivers. Then we install the new one.

DDU Instructions - AMD
1. Get this program, here: Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) | Wagnardsoft ...get the latest version, and save it to your desktop.
2. Download and save the latest Nvidia driver to your desktop.
Unhook the internet completely.
3. Reboot into Safe Mode and run DDU (Display Driver Uninstaller) choose the "Highly Recommend Option", and just do what it tells you.
4. First remove the AMD driver... then remove the Nvidia driver.
5. After it's done, reboot to normal mode, then just double click the Nvisia driver to install. If it want's to reboot, let it.
Rehook the internet.

Lastly, don't confuse the speed the RAM is running at, with the size of the page file in MB.
You have 16GB of RAM. As the computer runs, it starts filling up the RAM.
When the RAM is full... the computer then uses the page file as a substitute for more RAM.
I mention this because the value of 2933, looks more like the RAM speed, than a value you should use for the page file size.

Okay I'll follow your instructions. But would a driver conflict with my graphics card really be causing the memory issues that I'm having?

Also, I've read that there's a way to reinstall Windows without deleting all of my files. I'm just wondering would it be better for me to wipe everything?

I don't think the vid driver would be the problem. But ya never know.

Yes. If you do decide to just reinstall Windows 11... I would do a completely clean install.
Start from scratch. Then you will know for sure if the problem is caused by software or hardware.

I would also flash the BIOS. Over the past 6 months or so, motherboard manufacturers have released quite a few BIOS updates... just for Windows 11 reasons.

Lol. Well it costs over a 100 Euros to activate it and there's not a huge difference between activating it and not activating it. The difference between the two seems to be just basically personalization?
