Can't connect to a shared folder anymore

Hello,

I have 2 computers, 1 serves as a database host which my other computer connects to to run a program. Lately, after update KB5065426 I couldn't connect to that share anymore, it gave me the error that my credentials were incorrect.
I uninstalled the update, and it worked fine for a day or 2, after that, same issues.

Things I've tried:

Whether the update was still uninstalled.
New user.
New password.
Connect by IP rather than by hostname.
Reset network adapters.
Change the IP.
Clearing the credential list.
Adding the share by command over Powershell and CMD.
Deleting the share and recreating it.
Change who has access to the share.
Delete virus protection software.
Turn off all of the firewalls.
Change sharing settings within both the host and client PC.
I mostly tried solutions based on CoPilot's answers.

It would be appreciated if anyone here has a solution I can try, thanks in advance.

Don't know if you checked, but resetting adapters, resets your network profile to public.

As I can't edit it, I wanted to add I've tried

Changing some policies regarding guest access.
Turning SMB 1.0 back on.
Changing guest access in the registry.

I assume you're trying to access the desktop from the laptop. Are you using the user name and password for the desktop when you enter credentials from the laptop?

Actually, I am trying to access 1 desktop from the other. The username and password I use are from the host PC, I've made sure they are correct.

Duh, I was just working on a laptop and had it on my mind.

Have you tried mapping the network drive to access it?

Did you clone one machine to another without creating a new machine SID? If so, recent updates knock out file sharing and RDP between such machines. Some people have reported success using a program called "sidchg" to correct this situation, but there are a number of preconditions to satisfy before using it, and it has to do a lot of more or less undocumented stuff. Also, Sysinternals used to publish a utility "newsid" for this but withdrew it a few years ago, and their web site says Microsoft no longer supports systems that use it. Microsoft wants you to use SysPrep.

I will give that a try. Seems it just is a solution for SMBv1, but let's hope it works for my issue as well.

Not a clone, both were freshly installed last year.

We had to block that update at my work. Even uninstalling it didn't resolve the issues with file sharing. I honestly don't have or know of a fix right now that I could implement. There are a few other things that being in corp land I don't have access to (nor want to mess with). Couldn't find much online either back when I looked. I had to roll back a snapshot for a machine that had gotten it before the block was put in place.

I just love vendor stuff.....

I am honestly not sure, its 2 machines with special software made by a vendor doing broadcast stuff and I don't know what they are using to talk to each other. The engineering team is working with them on it, I just tried the basics I knew of at the time since I noticed that update was on the machines. Could be something else. But rollback did fix it. Uninstalling the update didn't. Installing the update broke it again. Waiting for them to get back to me. Just vendor things....

Yeah… I’ve been banging my head against the same kinda issue lately. While digging around forums and random threads I saw a few folks saying it might be SID/auth weirdness between machines (especially in small setups like this). One guy mentioned that Wittytool disk clone apparently has a SID change feature built in. i haven’t tried it myself yet though, so take that with a grain of salt.

I also saw people tossing around other options like newssid (old but some still try it) or just running sysrep to regenerate things. No clue which one will actually fix it lol… but at this point I’m probably gonna try a couple of them and see what sticks

. These recent Windows updates have been a bit of a mess tbh.
