Solved Can't enter PIN to stop require password on wake from sleep

New PC (specs filled in). I wanted to stop it asking for my PIN on waking from sleep but when I try to change the option in Accounts/Sign-in Options/If you've been away etc. The Window comes up to check my PIN before it allows the change there it freezes. I get no response from my keyboard entry and nothing in Settings responds I have to use task manager to end Credentials Manager UI host which is stalled using over 20% of CPU resources. I've run DISM commands and sfc /scannow but they find nothing. I've reported via feedback hub. Oh, I tried seach but it didn't come up with a similar thread.

I'd come to the conclusion it would probably need something like that. This is the most troublesome install I've ever had, lots of little irritations. It'll come right in the end

Right a repair install doesn't fix it so I guess I'll have to wait for an update or roll back. I think I,ve had enough for now, I can still use everything else I've tried so far. All the 3rd party apps work just fine it's only Microsoft stuff that's buggered.

An update won't fix this and a rollback won't work after 10 days nor if you did an inplace upgrade.

What 3rd party apps did you install?
Do a clean boot to eliminate software conflict causing the issue. If it doesn't happen in a clean boot, you have some software conflicting with Windows. Brink's procedure will help you weed out which one. Perform a Clean Boot in Windows 11 to Troubleshoot Software Conflicts Tutorial

If it still happens in a clean boot your account may be corrupted.
Create a new local account to see if issue exists.
How to create new acccount.
Settings>Accounts>Scroll down and click on Other Users.
Select add account>select I don't have this person's signin information. This will let you create a local account
In user name box name the account and assign a password.
Very Important- Make the new user an administrator. Once account is created, to the right of the new user name click down arrow. Select Change account type.
Click arrow to right of standard user and select Administrator.

Restart and you will see 2 users on your login screen. Login to the new user. See if the issue exists in this account.

If all is good there, it means your old account is corrupted. If this fixes your issue, report back and I can tell you how to safely get your user data out of the old account and into the new. If the system is new you may not have any data to move.

I've just tried it on my 24H2 26100.2605 and it changes for me without any issues. Have you tried removing your PIN before trying to change 'require sign in if you've been away'? You'd be asked for you password if you did. Or maybe removing the PIN then putting it back again (remove completely, NOT just change it) would fix your issues?

Thanks I'll try those suggestions and let you know if they work. I have tried booting into safe mode and there was no change. I was hoping for other things to keep my brain functioning properly but these will do fine.

I went through the clean boot and troubleshoot and that didn't show anything. I set up a new local account and that had the same problem. I went to remove my pin and the remove option is greyed out although I could change my PIN

so I don't know. Could it be time for a clean install?

No I've not touched group policy, this one's a Windows Home as Microsoft refuse to let me move my Pro key as it's "not the right sort of retail licence". I couldn't be bothered to fight as I don't need most/any of those features. I think the clean install route is the best option. I just need to decide when to go for it.

Do you sign in with a Microsoft account or a Local account? If it's a Microsoft account then there's on more thing you could try, switch to a Local account and see if you can then remove the PIN. You can switch back to a Microsoft account afterwards, if you like.

Thanks,I only use a Microsoft account, it suits me. I gone ahead with a clean install and the first thing I set after reconnecting my drives and setting the folder locations was to set the PIN to not required on wake. It worked so I'm happy with that. I shall finish setting up before allowing any updates so that I can have a working Image to restore.

Just to finish off this thread, I got up to date without mishap except for 24H2 which I've chosen not to install for the moment. The inability to remove the PIN is apparently a Windows thing if you use a Microsoft account (guilty!) but is easily changed there are loads of tutorials to allow it. I've added Group Policy Editor and Hyper-V to my home edition so I now have the bits from Pro that I want. Image is done and I'm all good until I mess something up and need to reimage the machine. My graphics card arrives tomorrow so if that goes well another image and I'm all set. Thanks for the help I've had I really appreciate it @glasskutter and @Bree.
