Can't force shutdown using power switch any more

A brief press of the power button can be a perfectly proper way to turn off a PC as long as you have configured it to do that in Control Panel.

I've also seen devices with a BIOS setting for number of seconds delay to shutdown from power switch.

The OP describes the issue as "a USB problem meant that the mouse/keyboard weren't working". As this is a laptop, does that mean the built-in keyboard and trackpad don't now work; an external USB/Wireless keyboard and mouse don't now work; or no possible keyboard/pointing device setup works?

I was presented the login screen background sliding down the screen to about half way with a large DOWN arrow and the text: "Slide to shutdown PC"

David,

This improved procedure survives SFC and I've deleted my earlier version i.e. my previous post.

You can disable the Slide to shutdown PC so you will not see it again until a Version update restores it.

Run this batch file as Admin
takeown /f "%WINDIR%\System32\SlideToShutDown.exe" /a icacls "%WINDIR%\System32\SlideToShutDown.exe" /inheritance:r /grant:r Administrators:F /c icacls "%WINDIR%\System32\SlideToShutDown.exe" /remove "Administrators" "Authenticated Users" "Users" "System"
It takes ownership of the file then takes away everybody's rights to do anything with the file.

When you have to force your computer off by sitting on the power button, there is a screen flicker as Windows attempts but fails to run the file and then the computer turns off.
I assume the next Version update will overwrite SlideToShutDown.exe with normal permissions and we'll have to run the batch file again.

I think my solution is not the only way of doing it.
  • I have seen claims that running the Power Troubleshooter will disable it but I did not try that. I was simply not convinced that it would disable it and I found some posts by fellow sufferers saying that it did not work.
  • I have other laptops which do not show that slider but which do have SlideToShutDown.exe so there must be a setting somewhere that enables or disables it.
  • There's nothing in PowerCfg.
  • I have Home and it does occur to me that GPEdit might contain a setting for this. If it does then Home users might be able to manually alter a corresponding Registry entry instead of jobbing the file's permissions.

@Brink - Perhaps a brief tutorial about this solution might be useful for others.

All the best,
Denis
