Steve,

The fact that you bother to mention changes makes me wonder if they are significant.

I had the same issue getting from 23h2 to 24h2. I worked on it for days but still had to clean install.

You would need to look at the failure logs to see the cause of your failure. Depending on where in the install the failure occurs, the log can be in multiple places.

If no error message occurs, the following log files are created when an upgrade fails during installation before the computer restarts for the second time. You have to look at these logs to get an idea of what's causing the failure.

C:\$Windows.~BT\Sources\panther\setupact.log
C:\$Windows.~BT\Sources\panther\miglog.xml
C:\Windows\setupapi.log
[Windows 10:] C:\Windows\Logs\MoSetup\BlueBox.log
C:\Windows\inf\setupapi.app.log
C:\Windows\inf\setupapi.dev.log
C:\Windows\panther\PreGatherPnPList.log
C:\Windows\panther\PostApplyPnPList.log
C:\Windows\memory.dmp

The following log files are created when an upgrade fails, and then you restore the desktop:

C:\$Windows.~BT\Sources\panther\setupact.log
C:\$Windows.~BT\Sources\panther\miglog.xml
C:\$Windows.~BT\sources\panther\setupapi\setupapi.dev.log
C:\$Windows.~BT\sources\panther\setupapi\setupapi.app.log
C:\Windows\memory.dmp

The following log files are created when an upgrade fails, and the installation rollback is initiated:

C:\$Windows.~BT\Sources\Rollback\setupact.log
C:\$Windows.~BT\Sources\Rollback\setupact.err

Mine rolled back so I found my particular error in the last 2 logs. It pointed to an issue with my user account but no indication what the issue actually was.
  • If logfiles do not direct you to what caused the error, I advise anyone to not waste his time. Either stay where you are or Bite the bullet. back up your data, and do a clean install. 24h2 will have you chasing your tail for days.

You guys are right a clean install would be better I just cannot due to apps I cannot reinstall

Any way I can send logs and maybe we could figure out what's preventing it?
Which apps can't you reinstall?

This was my checklist for a clean install - takes about 45 minutes to set up windows, make a system image, and then a bit longer to reinstall programs and files. I do a second system image after installing all programs and apps. That way you can always go back to that image if you ever have an issue in future, providing your files are regularly backed up elsewhere.

I can't think of anything that can't be reinstalled if it runs on Windows 11.

I would've gladly wiped it and started from scratch, but for reasons outside of my control I can't.
But, sometimes we have no choice despite the reasons we think we can't do a clean install. If it's old software we don't have a license key for or will no longer work, we adapt with new software.
Windows can be a fickle beast and really doesn't care about our "reasons".. Stuff happens. When it does, we do what we gotta do whether we like it or not, or we hobble along with what we got..

What reasons outside your control?! Unless you have some pirated software you can't reinstall?

There can be a host of valid reasons.
I would lose some applications if I reinstalled. They are perfectly legal installations [giveaways with permanent, non-transferable, one-time-only licences].

There can be a host of valid reasons.
Just because our reasons are valid to us, it's a fact that nothing lasts forever. We are not guaranteed any of our old software will work as long as we use Windows, perpetual license or not. Nor are we guaranteed we will never have to do a clean install. It's just not realistic to think either of those scenarios won't ever happen.
