Hi

I had disabled win update in the services applet, and when I try to enable it, I get:

I did a search for error 1058, and found this:

I am no stranger to the registry, but what gets me is:

*Replace <SERVICE NAME> with actual service name displayed on its property sheet, for example, see screenshot of step 3 in FIX 1.

What is the actual service name? Is it wuauserv? And what is "the property sheet"?

Are you on Win 10 or Win 11 and are you on Home or Pro?
If you're on Pro you can probably do something about that in Group Policy Editor.
And also in the Windows Update window, with the pause updates tool.

BUT... you need to fix Windows Update, first.


It's kind of hard to help, when we don't know what version and build of Windows, you're on.
You can type Winver in the Taskbar search box and find out. :-)



If, for example, you're trying to stay on say, 24H2 or 25H2 or any H2....

Your computer specs show you are on Windows 10...so, unless you are subscribed to the ESU program, you aren't getting Windows updates, whether it's on or not.

Keep in mind that if you are using Defender as your main AV/AM solution, it uses Windows Update to get the latest definition files.

Ok, got it.

Go to the reg entry as described in the art, and change DWORD to anything other than 4. This is a hack that I had done a while back, b/c you can't disable w.update in the services applet.

My issue here was I didn't know what 'property sheet' was until Ghot explained it. I know it as a 'tab'
