Can't share folder with a local account

My new Windows 11 system has two user accounts - one for myself, using an MS account for login, the other a local account using username/password. I can and have logged in just fine with both of them.

I have a shared folder which I can access remotely using the MS account, but if I try to access it using the local account, which I have given Read access to, it says "The user name or password is incorrect."

Hi there.

Have you ever logged into that these accounts with a Microsoft username and password or have you only ever used a pin?
It’s an answer I usually reserve for Remote Conection problems but may also apply here.

If a user has never logged in to their user account using their Microsoft Use/Pass, then there is a good chance this is the problem. Both users would need to do this logging into their own user account. The process should only need to be completed once, per install.

What is the folder path?

If you create a folder off the root of C: such as C:\Shared, that would automatically be fully locally shareable by all accounts.

Other locations may require a bit more setup and whether the users are Standard or Administrator may also be a factor.

Account #1 has logged in with both username/password and pin. Account #2 has never had a pin, and is a local account, so Microsoft account credentials do not apply. Other computers on my network also have shared folders and this is not a problem for them.

I’m out then, above my paygrade now. If machine 1 knows its own log/pass, then machine 2 should be able to access 1 with the machines login/pass. Past that working for many in the past, it’s not applicable to you.
I’ll watch to see when you find the fix, wishing you luck

One thing I didn't see here is the mention of Standard rights on the Local Account, can be an issue when trying to access an account that is an Administrator. I believe both Microsoft Account and Local Account can have either type rights but the first User created during initial installation of Windows usually has to be an Administrator.

When you created the share, did you use "Advanced Sharing" or did you use the Sharing Wizard? Why do I ask? If you use the wizard, it will also set the appropriate NTFS file system permissions. However, if you use advanced sharing, it will create the share and assign the appropriate permissions to the share, but it will not address the NTFS file permissions, it is left to you to address this manually.

I’m assuming when you try to remotely access the share folder with the local acct creds, you’re typing “computername\username” in the username field, correct? Just to rule out the obvious before we go too far in-depth here..

I right click the folder->Properties->Sharing->Share and add both user accounts. I haven't seen any Sharing Wizard and can't seem to find an option for this.

I normally don't do this when accessing shared drives on other computers, but I've tried it both ways here.

I read "access it using the local account" as in logging in locally, but I see you meant accessing the share remotely using the local account. That should be no problem. I think you get that error (or something similar) when the account has no password and the option to connect without password is not enabled, but that doesn't look like the problem here.

try this to narrow it down some:

the share folder > share settings > permissions > add "everyone" and give read/write

see if you can then access it with the local admin account creds

also - are both PCs on the same network with the network type set to public or private (as long as both are the same)?

You need to open the options for File Explorer and make sure that the option to use the wizard is enabled...

Edit: My suggestion - If this option was off, remove the share that you created (simply stop sharing it), enable this option, then re-share with this option turned on.

There is one more setting to check:

Open Settings > Network & internet > Advanced network settings > Advanced sharing settings > All networks > Password protected sharing. Turn OFF that option.

Let me explain a little bit about what this setting does.

If that option is ON and you create a share that is shared with "everyone", then everyone is considered to be "everyone that has an account on the PC". However, if you turn that option OFF, then literally everyone who can access the network can connect to that share whether or not they have an account on that PC.

or remove the share (or create second test share), but create it with the local admin account to begin with so that account has ownership from start to finish and see if its just a hiccup somewhere...

I'm pretty sure this issue concerns authentication rather than permissions. Everything I've seen so far is consistent - I cannot authenticate as rdpuser (this is the name of my local account). I also cannot remote desktop in as rdpuser.

One thing that may not be clear from my original post - from the computer that wishes to access the server, I type "\\COMPUTERNAME" into the address bar, and I am asked to enter my username/password. I have tried both rdpuser and COMPUTERNAME\rdpuser and both are rejected. I do not even get to see the list of shared folders.

I logged in as rdpuser, created a folder 'rdpshare' in Documents, and saw it had been automatically shared. But I still can't access it or any shared folders remotely.

Good. That will affect only those shares where you add the user "everyone". You can still limit access but assigning specific user names to a share if you want more security.
