Win 11Pro v24H2 build 26100.3775
Yesterday I upgraded my mobo from a X670 to a X870 and installed a nre GPU but kept the same CPU. After the installation I found that Windows wasn't activated automatically, which I have never had after any installations before. I used the telephone option and was able to activate Windows. However, trying to sign on to Microsoft, I had to change my password.

After the change, I checked My Devices and found that, where I had my wife's PC and my 'old' PC listed, only my wife's PC was shown.

Also after the upgrade, I kept getting the following errors in PhoneLink and the XBox app:

PhoneLink:

1745436480036.webp

XBox:

1745436506463.webp

1) How can I get my 'new' PC to display in My Devices?

2) How do I fix the XBox and PhoneLink errors?

II don't use Phonelink or Xbox so won't go there.

To add a device to your MS account go to Sign in to your account
and register device.

When Windows is activated, the license is tied to the hardware. MS considers a different mobo and gpu to be a different machine. It required a call to MS as you found out.

Made that call and activated Windows. However, I can't link my phone, can't sign on to PhoneLink or the XBox app. I've reset my password on the MS website. However, my new PC does not appear in the My Devices spot. How can I get it to be registered there?

OK, I got with tech support today. In researching the problem, they had me sign off my normal MS ID account and into a 'local' account. I was surprised that I had the same desktop as my previous MS account, and they reassured me that nothing changed except the ID being local only.

After much fooling around, they suggested that I try to sign on to a different PC. However, my wife's PC did not have my MS account registered so they left me to add it to her PC and try to access the apps that were failing on my PC. I was able to use my MS ID to get into XBox Game Pass on her PC so that, in my mind, indicated something screwed on my PC.

I went back to my PC and attempted to sign in as my original MS ID. However, that took me to a brand new desktop empty of all my apps and icons. So now I have my original ID associated with a blank desktop.

How do I get my original ID and desktop back from the local ID that tech support had me log on with? This is really getting frustrating.

I have fixed the issue. Apparently, something regarding my MS ID was corrupted in Windows after the new mobo install. I restored my C: drive from a Macrium backup from the morning of the install and now my Windows shows that it not only is activated but associated with my MS account, where it was only activated during the problems I was having. I can now sign on with my regular ID and the XBox app and PhoneLink now work as they have. Thank goodness for Macrium. Saved my butt again.
