Can't Update Brother Printer's Firmware

primary for .. use one of them.
Google 8.8.8.8
or
Cloudflare 1.1.1.1

as secondary .. use one of them.
Google 8.8.4.4
or
Cloudflare 1.0.0.1

also within the TCP/IP settings make sure you have an
IP address
subnet mask
Gateway address

these can found in your printer settings if you have the printer set up wifi connected
if its USB connected give it the addressing that corresponds with the router.
example ..
IP address
192.168.1.88

subnet mask
255.255.255.0

Gateway address
192.168.1.1

the above is an example but can be used.
best of luck, Steve ..
Brother had me print that out from the printer when I talked to them. The printout lists an IP address, a Subnet mask, and a IP Gateway address. So I believe that is all OK. Thanks for your help.

It also lists a DNS address config as AUTO, Primary DNS server as 192.168.4.1 and a Secondary DNS server as 209.18.47.62.

However, when I drill down to the Primary and Secondary, as I believe your instructions say to do, they are both listed as all 0s. But there is not any mention of WLAN anywhere on the printout, so I think what I just mentioned is in a different area of the printer's settings.

Not sure if this matters in following your suggestions but my printer is connected using an Ethernet cable. I believe WLAN means something to do with wireless connection. So, should I still try that?

So am I thinking correctly that if I set the WLAN Primary and Secondary as mentioned above, it would not do anything for me since I too use an Ethernet connection?

If you're connected and printing with the Ethernet, changing the WLAN configuration isn't going to change anything. My WLAN has never been enabled on this printer, so I'm sure it's not connecting to my wireless network. :D

you should see
000.000.000.000

write it so it looks like this for the primary DNS
001.001.001.001
for Cloudflare DNS
or
008.008.008.008
for Google DNS

write it so it looks like this for secondary DNS
001.000.000.001
for Cloudflare DNS
or
008.008.004.004
for Google DNS

the IP address
subnet mask
gateway address
should all be under All settings > network > TCP/IP settings

but try the firmware update connection first with just the DNS added.
best of luck, Steve ..

ps. just to add ..
my Brother MFC-L3710CW is set up that way with Wifi and auto-updates its firmware
you should be able to set firmware updates up via Ethernet in a similar fashion.

I will look for setting up auto-updates with my Ethernet connection but Brother's support never even mentioned it. I'll do a WEB search to see if I can find anything.

Thank you. I did find it and also in searching it said to use the Brother utilities in place of auto-updates. That has been tried and it too, failed.

i have just checked mine and it states 'firmware up to date'

Q.
do you know how to set up an internet connection on your computer using static addressing.
IP address
subnet mask
gateway address
DNS addressing

because all you are doing is setting up a static internet connection on the printer
so the printer can connect to the internet using static address.

also it might be an idea if you have set everything up on the printer
to power the printer down then restart the printer to see if the settings have held.

but i am running out of ideas.
best of luck, Steve ..

Thanks for your suggestions. To answer you about static connections, no I don't. I use a fellow who can remote into my machine and do that for me. Actually he sets up everything for me and then if I have problems, I call him for help. I think for the time being I'm going to ride this out and hope Brother comes up with a fix. I have never before had a problem updating any Brother printer before. Thanks again.
