Hi, It's been going on like that for a while now. Whenever I try to install the 24H2 update from 23H2, it will download everything normally and PC will reboot into the update. But then the update will fail and Windows will revert back to 23H2 due to the failure. The error code is ''0xc1900101''. I am clueless on what to do, Microsoft has not done anything to fix this and I read elsewhere others have the same issue. What can I do myself to update my Windows installation to 24H2?

I believe that error indicates an incompatible driver. Using the upgrade failure log, you might be able to determine which one.
Depending on where in the install the failure occurs, the log can be in multiple places.

If no error message occurs, the following log files are created when an upgrade fails during installation before the computer restarts for the second time. You have to look at these logs to get an idea of what's causing the failure.

C:\$Windows.~BT\Sources\panther\setupact.log
C:\$Windows.~BT\Sources\panther\miglog.xml
C:\Windows\setupapi.log

[Windows 10:] C:\Windows\Logs\MoSetup\BlueBox.log
C:\Windows\inf\setupapi.app.log
C:\Windows\inf\setupapi.dev.log
C:\Windows\panther\PreGatherPnPList.log
C:\Windows\panther\PostApplyPnPList.log
C:\Windows\memory.dmp

The following log files are created when an upgrade fails, and then you restore the desktop:
C:\$Windows.~BT\Sources\panther\setupact.log
C:\$Windows.~BT\Sources\panther\miglog.xml
C:\$Windows.~BT\sources\panther\setupapi\setupapi.dev.log
C:\$Windows.~BT\sources\panther\setupapi\setupapi.app.log
C:\Windows\memory.dmp

The following log files are created when an upgrade fails, and the installation rollback is initiated:
C:\$Windows.~BT\Sources\Rollback\setupact.log
C:\$Windows.~BT\Sources\Rollback\setupact.err

Mine rolled back so I found my particular error in the last 2 logs.
If logfiles do not direct you to what caused the error, I advise anyone to not waste his time. Either stay where you are or Bite the bullet. back up your data, and do a clean install. 24h2 will have you chasing your tail for days.

Where would I have to specifically look inside the logs to find the error? There is a lot of text.

Usually closer to the bottom, but it won't be the absolute bottom. You should find the first mention of the error code.
But these logfiles are in MS speak so they are most times as clear as mud.

I have an ''failed to merge telemetry file'' error, I found it in the logs. I have O&O ShutUp10++ installed which disables telemetry on windows. Could that be the issue?

Hi, It's been going on like that for a while now. Whenever I try to install the 24H2 update from 23H2, it will download everything normally and PC will reboot into the update. But then the update will fail and Windows will revert back to 23H2 due to the failure. The error code is ''0xc1900101''.

This problem can be troubleshooted or you can:
a) manually backup files and clean install
b) have Windows backup files and clean install
c) reset save files
d) custom install
etc.

If you want to troubleshoot then see the steps in the earlier post.

Links can be posted for options a, b, c, and d.

some times going into safe mode using the Windows 11 ISO to perform the Win 11 upgrade works
its a method i have had better success with then most other ways.

best of luck, Steve ..

would i keep all of my files doing this procedure? and do you mean genuinely using an ISO or using the installation assistant? I just tried doing the installation assistant while having my anti telemetry software uninstalled. And it still didn't work.

Been trying all kinds of ways, none of them worked. Even followed official Microsoft troubleshooting documentation. Didn't work either, I guess I'll have to do an backup with an external drive. Thanks for all the help guys.

So I have now tried to create a recovery image on an external SSD. However it tells me certain system files are missing and therefore the backup cannot be created. It asks me to use the ISO and such to fix this, but it will just lead to me just crashing during the update. I am even locked out of making an backup, what can I do?

backup your data that you want to keep make a list of installed programs
and then do a clean install of Windows 11, many have had to do similar.

bets of luck, Steve ..
