General Change Size of Columns Width for Folder in Windows 11 File Explorer

This tutorial will show you how to change the size of columns width for a folder in File Explorer for your account in Windows 11.

When you are using a details layout view for a folder, all items in the folder will be displayed by details in columns. You can change the width of specific or all columns to fit the content how you like.

Option One

"Size Column to Fit" in Folder


1 Open File Explorer (Win+E).

2 Open the folder you want to change the width of columns.

3 Perform an action below: (see screenshots below)
  • Double click/tap on a column divider to size to fit the column to the left of the divider.
  • Right click or press and hold on the column header (ex: "Name") you want to size to fit, and click/tap on Size Column to Fit.
4 Repeat step 3 for any other columns you want to size to fit.

Option Two

"Size All Columns to Fit" in Folder


1 Open File Explorer (Win+E).

2 Open the folder you want to change the width of columns.

3 Right click or press and hold on any column header. (see screenshot below)

4 Click/tap on Size All Columns to Fit.

Option Three

Drag to Change Width of Selected Columns in Folder


1 Open File Explorer (Win+E).

2 Open the folder you want to change the width of columns.

3 Move the pointer over the right border line of the column you want to change the width of until the pointer turns into a Move_cross.png cross with double arrows. (see screenshot below)

4 Click/tap and hold, drag the column border left or right until it's the width size you want, and release.

5 Repeat step 3 and step 4 for any other columns you want to resize the width of.

Option Four

Change Width of Selected Columns in Pixels in Folder


1 Open File Explorer (Win+E).

2 Open the folder you want to change the width of columns.

3 Right click or press and hold on any column header, and click/tap on More. (see screenshot below)

4 Perform the following steps to change the width size of column: (see screenshot below)
  • Select a checked column (ex: "Name") you want to change the width size of.
  • Type how many pixels wide you want the selected column. The number of pixels you can enter will vary depending on your display resolution and DPI scaling level.
  • Repeat the two steps above for any other columns you want to change the width size of.
  • Click/tap on OK when finished to apply.

Can it be done as .reg backup or anything like that? (including colums one want + size to fit + apply to all folders?)

You could use the method below to apply folder view settings like this one to all folders.


WinSetView is a good tool to use as well.
